Hopefully I am wrong, but it looks like the Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB drive I bought from Dell six months ago is not going to be covered with any warranty. The drive just died on me and Seagate Disk Tools gives me an error code. I went to Seagate's website and entered the serial number and it said this was an OEM drive which needs to be serviced from the supplier, Dell in my case. I have just spent two hours of telephone hell trying to get through to Dell. Unless you actually have a Dell computer with a service tag, getting warranty service on parts seems darn near impossible. One sales representative went so far as to say the drive had no warranty but was "supported by service and technical support," whatever that means. I got the number and was put in an endless telephone loop where every couple of minutes they ask for the tag on my Dell computer, which I don't have. After twenty minutes listening to musak on hold, I finally hung up.
What is the deal? Who would buy a hard drive, that normally comes with a 3 year warranty, if it included zero warranty? I knew in advance the warranty was probably only one year, but I didn't think the warranty was only through the 30 day return period.
Maybe someone knows how to cut through the Dell stuff and help me.
