Dell Gives Linux Laptops Another Chance

Out of my price range. I'd like to see makers sell machines with blank drives, and a bit of a discount. I don't know how realistic that is though. Crapware lowers the cost of computers, and is easy to deal with.

Bwahahahaha! Sorry for sounding skeptical, but...

I'd be willing to bet the only reason Dell is doing this is so winders users can install "7" & XP on them. 😀

I hear you. However, the OS makes up such a small part of the overall price the discount would be minimal. With volume licensing, Dell doesn't spend very much per Windows license....less than you would think. Providing linux does remove the licensing fee, however linux still needs to be customized and tested for Dell platforms so it's not like your getting a free OS. You might not be paying for linux itself, but they are definitely passing that development cost on.

In the end, you MIGHT get $30-$50 off the price in exchange for a blank drive. You'd get steeper discounts just waiting for sales.

Can you blame them? Windows 8 looks like total rubbish unless you're a tablet user.

Well they said they do expect it to retail for a bit less than the windows version so you are getting a bit of a discount supposedly.

"George said the laptop won’t be able to dual boot Windows."

So does this imply that Windows has evolved to not allow dual boot, or has the Dell hardware evolved to reject it ?

I didn't realize there are any computers that would not allow dual boot.

I suspect George misspoke, and what was meant was Dell wouldn't offer or support dual boot systems.

IIRC, Dell used to offer a few systems with dual boot linux / windows. I believe this is all that means.

You'd give up support if you admitted you went dual boot, but of course for home systems the typical > 15 mins troubleshooting requires you insert your system disc and do a reinstall or boot to the restore partition.

It's kinda sad when you think about it that they have to resort to crapware just to maximize their profits. Would be nice if they could just let you pick your OS and you pay extra for the license if it's Windows.

Dittos! But...

That's one of the best ultrabooks available!

It's constructed with aluminum & carbon fiber. It crams a 13" display into a 12" form factor -- has gorilla glass -- and only weighs 3 pounds.

Ubu is the frosting on the cake...

Project Sputnik with Barton George (YouTube: 7 min runtime)

EDIT

BTW, if you happen to watch this video...

The interview was shot in May, 2012.

At that point in time, "Sputnik" was still a pilot program, but due to the overwhelming response, Dell (obviously) has already decided to move it into the product phase.

Product arrival is scheduled for Fall 2102, but you can participate in the trials by loadling the install image I linked to (above).

After doing some investigating, I wish to redact my original statement.

The stated purpose of this "project" is to develop a lightweight machine (literally & figuratively) for DevOps.

It isn't a ploy to get around winders 8 Security Boot, so called.

Man, this thing would be right up my alley! Heh! It's only money, yes?!?!? 😀
