DEll gets closer to AMD

My guess is we're going to want to add that [AMD] product line in the future," Rollins said in an interview on Wednesday with InfoWorld editors.

"If we basically sucked up all of AMD's [manufacturing] capacity it would not be enough. They don't have enough capacity for us to use them on the desktop. For us, fundamentally, AMD is much more interesting in the server, workstation or gaming arenas," Rollins explained.

perhaps in 2006 when AMD has their new plants open

AMD rose by 74 cents today and stands at $18.03 after rumours of Dell using the processors got a bit closer to reality.

With AMD adding capacity with that new deal, and FAB 36 coming online they have the means for dell to sell quite a few AMD based manchines.

Translation: Dell Looking for a better CPU deal from Intel.

No way you'll see AMD chips at Dell. I will stop posting for two months if it comes to pass.

There's an artilcle from www.theinquirer.net which claims that dell has a lot of bargaining leverage with Intel. If the acticle was true, then Dell is most likely just trying to get intel chips for cheaper by saying that they'll start using AMD chips. Dell is Intel's biggest client after all.

I agree that you'll probably never see an AMD chip in a dell ever.

I also agree that Dell is just saying this in order to get a better chip deal with Intel. However, I could see Dell eventually using Opteron for a server line. However, I agree that you will never see Athon 64 desktops sold at Dell.......

Someone at Xtremesystems said he would be banned if bush didn't win with at least 52%. He's still there. Why do people even bother saying things like this?

Like him I'm right (coincidently I said Bush would win in P&N) and have full confidence enough to ban myself from place I like hanging out a lot.

I sure wouldn't hold my breath on that one, although a few might pop up in servers. Desktops?? Nah...

Whats really funny is the idiots over at Gateway dropping AMD a year or two ago. Like...uh they command some kind of real market share? Gateway had its day in the sun a decade ago and then threw it in the dumpster with crappy systems. I haven't looked to see if they reversed that idiot decision, don't really care....

but costomers simply are not asking for amd

Thats because consumers are stupid, all they have ever known or seen is the blue people. But Intel works for em, we do not want AMD becomming as big as Intel because I am worryed that at that point AMD could become as money hungery as Intel is and release 31 Stage 4 GHZ POS's

They now sell a single AMD model, an Athlon 64 laptop which is basically a tweaked clone of the eMachines M6810. Take a look at your local Best Buy, should be around.

They became quasi-decent after they bought emachines, and dropped all of their stores. I still think that among the pre-built market Dell is the best choice to go.... butI would never get a pre-built desktop again... laptop is another story.

Yes, iliterate people are not asking for the best CPU's in the market, they are asking what they see in TV!

If you do that, then I will post more often!!! 😛

I would like to see AMD cpus in Dell systems, but it won't happen, due to amd's limited capacity. I worked for 6 months in one of their factories in austin tx, where they can ship up to 40,000 systems in just one day, working 2 shifts. Dell is very focused on quick delivery and turnaround. They don't like to make customers wait for anything.

I think Dell is going to start selling AMD chips next quarter. It wasn't this article that makes me think that, in this article from the Inq, Paul Otellini from Intel was asked "Do you think Dell might consider selling AMD processors?" -- his response was that he "would certainly hope not". If Intel didn't know something about Dell going AMD, he would have given a much stronger denial.

No, Dell is not going to start selling AMD based systems anytime soon.

You heard it from the horse's mouth, and it's the exact same thing I've been saying (for a LONG time)... If Dell sees a way to make money by using AMD cpu's, then they will. Right now, it's not even worth considering (for them), since AMD simply cannot guarantee the amount of chips Dell would require.

Would I be surprised if AMD cut back on their desktop offerings, to increase their supply of Opterons, and then maybe have a chance at Dell workstations?... Not really. AMD is going to go hard for the server market.

ahh this makes me sad. I get a call from my broker this morning telling me that my AMD was sold because it hit $18, now its at 18.79 and will probably get up to 19.50 or so by next friday. boy am I unhappy tonight. *sigh*

anyways I agree with zebo that its just a ploy to extract more money from intel.
