Dell fails to recognize the stock power cord

I have a two year old xps 17 that is now refusing to charge the battery with an error that says that it no longer recognized the power cord(and transformer) as the stock equipment.

The internet has many people griping about this but as yet no cure. Anyone here run into this before.

Is this just programmed obsolecence?

I've heard that Dell chargers, have a small center pin that carries data as to whether it is an "official" Dell charger. If that pin or cable gets damaged, I would expect that it would stop being recognized properly.

this is quite funny... 'cuz a lot of Dell laptops seem to have this problem. I just sort of gave up on their notebooks sometime ago.

diagnostics are much easier if you have SPARE dell junk... which most people don't have Dell stuff lying around.

software:
1. reset/reload diff OS
2. bios upgrade/downgrade

believe it or not...
1. swap for diff. power cord.
2. swap the battery.
3. test with a new DC jack.
4. swap the charging board.
5. swap the motherboard
