I'm needing to build a semi-cheap web surfer for my mom to use. The problem is that building it part by part add up, especially when I don't have an OS to put on it(was going to try out beta Vista). I was then checking out some hot deals somewhere and saw this deal. Any reason to not grab the dell? Can I build something similar cheaper? These things even finally come with a PCI-x slot...

Specs:

Dimension E521
AMD Sempron? 3400+, Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition

Unit Price: $279

AMD Sempron? 3400+ (A64 3200+ for $20)
Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition
Memory 512MB Single Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz - 1DIMM
Hard Drive 80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache?
CD ROM/DVD ROM 16X DVD ROM Drive
Monitor No Monitor
Video Card NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU
Sound Cards Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

That doesn't seem too bad a deal, especially since it includes an OS. If you really want to check how sweet the deal is, go to Newegg and start adding those parts. A rough estimate puts all those parts together at around $279, but if you looked hard (at all), you can probably build one for cheaper; maybe $50 cheaper if it's worth the hassle. I have no experience with Dell, except their website that tried to scam me, but I've seen bad experiences with their Support. Then again, who hasn't with any company.

Imp is right... i'd say cough up 50 bones extra and get the Dell... no i would never buy a dell for myself but their support and warranty will mean less headaches for you later on cause if you build it yourself its up to YOU!

Do you want to be tech support for your mom?

It's a good deal, but I'm not sure how I feel about Dell anymore... just going through Dell hassles now - for an E521 no less. 🙂
