Dell E520: Has anyone purchased this unit recently?

Nocturnal

Lifer
My uncle just ordered this and I just wanted to know if there are any IDE ports on this motherboard? He ordered the highest model C2D with 1GB of memory with just a regular CD/DVD drive. I plan to buy him a BENQ burner from CompUSA today but I would like to know if there will be an available IDE channel to connect the drive to. I know for a fact they only use SATA hard drives now unless you request otherwise. If anyone who has recently purchased a E520, could you let me know? Thanks!

No IDE according to documentation for the E520. Click me

Here is where you can find all of the documentation on this computer. Another great place for support for Dells are their forums.

ETA - If he's able to at this point, he should cancel the order and re-order with a burner.

That system is SATA only so here are 3 options:

1) Buy a Liteon SATA DVDRW from Newegg for $35
2) Buy an IDE to SATA adapter for $15
2) Buy an IDE controller card for $15-$30

John, I have an E510 and it's SATA only. All documentation says the E520 is SATA only. Also, a search on Dell's forums using the search words 'E520' and 'IDE' provide other customers' experiences with buying an SATA only computer.

You could have simply said my use of IDE was a typo considering the options that I listed. My OP has been corrected. 😛

John's use of the term IDE was a typo. 😛

OP, if your dad can cancel his order he might consider doing so. It would be cheaper for him to add a DVD burner to that system from Dell than going the long way of adding an IDE burner. Adding a burner via Dell usually only costs around an additional $30 at the time you order the system.

my mother just got one last week and I looked all over and no IDE port, it does have a floppy port though.
