Hello, long time reader first time poster here.

I have a Dell E520 which I upgraded from a Core2 E6300 1.86GHz to a Core2Quad Q6600.

In the dell bios, there is an option which allows me to disable one core. If I switch it on on the E6300, I get one core in the task manager, if I switch it on in the Q6600, I get two cores active in the task manager.

I was wondering how exactly the bios is doing this, does it actually physically turn off one core or do tasks still jump from one core to another (just alternating and throttling).

because if it turns off one core on each die, won't temperatures become uneven as one core is always on and the other is always off on each of the dual core dies?

Also, I was wondering on the task manager for windows vista, which graph corresponds to which core of the Q6600? Since two cores are on the same die for each of the two dies, is there a more precise way to tell which cores are being used on which die? thanks,
