when i first saw this system, i thought it was such a good deal.

DELL PowerEdge Server Dual Xeon 2.0GHz $129

http://www.pacificgeek.com/product.asp?id=847892&C=284&S=1181

comes with 73 GB U-160 SCSI drive, 512 MB ECC RAM.

a legacy system but still an INCREDIBLY good deal.

or so i thought.

then i realized - that's a used drive. very used.

it's still a good deal. but i don't feel like playing Hard Drive Roulette.

if anybody buys this system, i'm curious how long the hard drive lasts.

Beware of how servers are priced. Sometimes even though it says it is a dual processor it may only come with one processor or none. Drives may be exra also.

Ha, with dual 2Ghz P4 based Xeons, that thing is much slower than any low end dual core system today. Heck, high end Athlon 64s systems would be faster.

Those servers can be upgraded to dual 3 ghz xeons i think, and reg ecc ram is pretty cheap on ebay for 1 gig sticks, its still old though, and upgrades are highly limited. I was going to get a similar one (It could hold more ram) but decided against it in favor of building an extremely low budget custom pc as it had more room to grow.
