So the next wave of iPod clones is ready to attack. The Rio Nitrus is available now...very small and svelte but severely lacking in capacity. However, two other players have a lot of promise. There's a new HD-based unit from Samsung that will supposedly launch with the new Napster 2.0 (apparently the $9.95/month unlimited download service option will only let you transfer music to Napster-branded MP3 players!)
And then there's the Dell DJ. I first found out about it in my latest Businessweek...then found out more at www.djhacks.com...the biggest Dell DJ fansite as of now. Apparently Dell will be launching their own online music store (enough already?) and jukebox software (please don't rebrand MusicMatch!) to go with this.
Here are the supposed specs based on a guesstimate of which player Dell is rebranding:
- 20 GB hard drive holds up to 500 CD?s worth of music
- High-speed download (Up to 8 MB per second with USB 2.0*)
- MP3 & Windows Media? music file playback, format-upgradeable (AAC possibly?)
- VoiceNav ? Just Say It to Play It!
- Anti-skip Protection - Up to 8 minutes
- FM tuner w/ 12 Available station presets
- Rechargeable, replaceable Li-Ion battery plays up to 12 hours
- Easy-to-use scroll wheel
- Digital voice recorder
- Built-in mic for recording lectures, meetings
- Be your own DJ with playlists
- Normal, shuffle, repeat & intro play modes
- Large, Blue-Green backlit LCD
- Programmable equalizer
I can bet that Gateway will also have their own MP3 player soon too.
So does anyone know anything about these new digital music players? Will the iPod finally be dethroned as the music player of choice for PC users?
