It seems as though my trusty Dell PS has ceased up. The internal PS fan is making a very loud grinding noise so I'm guessing air flow is not the best right now. To cut to the chase...it needs to be replaced soon. I know I need an ATX PS but will any do the job? Do I need to look for anything in particular that will fit in my case? Dell wants to charge me $75 for a replacement PS (375watts). I know I can get a much better, larger, quieter PS for probably more than half of that price. Does anyone have a recommendation as to (1) what will fit in my Dimension 9100 and (2) has the correct connections that I need? The quieter the better.

I appreciate any help.

Thanks!

D

Any standard ATX psu will fit. However you'll have a small gap below the new psu (it's shorter than the proprietary Dell unit), and you'll most likely need to bend the tabs on the left side of the case in order for it to fit properly.

As far as psu recommendations I'd recommend an 80 plus unit such as the 430 or 500W Antec EarthWatts or Corsair VX450. Don't skimp on a psu. :p

I thought that Dell MBs used regular ATX connections, but used a different pin-out than standard ATX?

Has Dell gone to using a standard ATX pin-out on their MBs & PS?
