Dell Dimension 9100 default ram configuration...

For those who order the Dell Dimension 9100 with the default 512mb DDR2, what is the configuration? is it 2x256 or 1x512? My goal is to upgrade the memory department to >= 2 gig. Also, what type of RAM can I use for this system? Thanks

It's dual channel, so it's most likely 2x256mb. 4 memory banks, up to 4 GB, uses DDR2-400 and DDR2-533. Don't use generic RAM in it, it most likely won't work. Standard quality Crucial, Corsair, and Kingston should be fine. OCZ value RAM will work too. Other value RAM, mostly likely, but not guaranteed.

Is it ok to add 2gigs (2x1gig) to the 2 memory banks that are left or is it better to sell off the 2x256 and get 4x512? The memory I planning to get is the Corsair value select DDR2 4200. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

2x1GB should be fine. The Corsair Value RAM should be ok, I've heard of one or two cases of 8400s/9100s not liking the value grade RAM, but the vast majority of people have been able to use it without problems.
