Dell Dimension 8300

I have a Dimension 8300 that I bought in 2003. I have 4 slots for memory. I am currently at 2x256.....

I ordered 2x512 from Dell... and just opened the case for the first time the other day.... I am getting bf2... and checked the properties and saw it said 512mb ram... then I opened it to change the video card and realized in fact thats what I had. Dell has since been no help....

back to the point.

...... there are 4 slots. 1 and 3 are filled. They have greay clips. 2 and 4 have black clips. Can I get 2x512, replace 1 and 3 with them, move the 2x256 to 2 and 4 and then run at 1.5g?

Also... What is the downside of buying cheap memory.. ($40.00 per 512)

Yes, you can replace those chips located in DIMMs 1 and 3 and move them to DIMMs 2 and 4. You can install your 2x512 chips in DIMMs 1 and 3 then.

What do you mean by run at 1.5 GHz? Is this the clock speed of your proc? The proc speed will not be affected by the orientation of your RAMs. If the clock speed of your proc is 1.5GHz, then it will remain as is whatever you do with your RAM.

If you bought a Dell branded RAM, it has a lifetime warranty. What's the brand of your RAMs by the way. Your 2x512 RAMs?

I meant will run with 1.5GB RAM I have a 2.8ghz p4. I know that will remain the same. I don't have the 2x512 yet. Didn't really know what to get. BUT Dell hopefully will be sending me some of their stock ones.. whatever they are... because they didn't send them to me when I ordered it.. They jipped me.. but it was almost 3 years ago and I now finding out..

IF I buy them what is the difference if I buy the $35 a piece chips from newegg than buying the ones that cost $100 a piece?
