Hey guys...

Check this out and tell me what you all think....is it a good deal or can I get something better?

I wanted to get a new Dell today morning but those morons at Dell discontinued the 8100 series and now only have the 8200 series (cost alot more n i'm tight on tha budget...)

Anyway, just ordered me a refurbished computer with the following specs:

Processor : Dell 8100 Series P4 1.5GHZ Mini Tower
Memory: 256MB PC800 RDRAM (2 RIMMs)
Floppy Drive: 1.44M Floppy Disk Drive
Hard Disk Drive: 20 GB EIDE Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
Video: 32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 4X AGP Graphics Card with TV-Out
Modem: Conexant V.90/56K DataFax Modem for Windows
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Live! Value Digital Sound Card
CD Read-Write Drive: 8X/4X/32X CD-RW
DVD Drive: 16X DVD-ROM

Software:Microsoft® Windows® Millennium (Windows Me)
Norton Antivirus® 2000
DVD Software
Resource CD
Software
Microsoft® Works Suite 2001
Software

Misc: Shipping Material
Dell Enhanced Quiet Key Keyboard (Midnight Gray)
Microsoft PS/2 IntelliMouse (Midnight Gray)

Warranty : Standard 1-Year Limited Warranty,
1-Year Next-Business-Day On-site Service
and 1-Year Phone Tech Support.

All this for $865.00.

(this price doesn't include tax and shipping but I'm not using Dell's shipping method - so I save about $95.00 there)

So, roughly with tax and shipping, let's say $950.00.

whatya think?

Not a bad price but I think you get more bang for your buck with a refurbished Dell Dimension 4100 since I don't need a P4 nor RDRAM.

BTW for those curious here's the URL for Dell's refurbs delloutlet.com

Rossman: How low do the stripped down models go for? Are they the ones with the Intel 815ea boards?

russw--I've seen the stripped ones go for just over $400.....but, you had to be quick. It seems like they had a lot more cheap refurbs a few months ago. I've had a couple friends go with the refurbs and had no problems.

Outkast4eva--Looks like a very nice deal. Do you still have to pay tax since it's shipped out of state?

Final price with tax to Philly is $925.54.....I'm thinking shipping will be about $25.00 or so. So roughly $950.00....Will post it as soon as I get it...

Normally I avoid refurbs, but I too can attest that Dell's refurbs are essentially as good as new and carry a warranty.

Yah I was so against the idea of going with a refurb...but since I couldn't get what I wanted in a new condition, decided to go with tha refurb since the price wasn't that bad either....

I just bought 5 for work and they're all perfectly fine.

And in a teaser of a note - both of the 8100s I ordered with 20GB HD actually had 40GB. :)

Oh, last thing - shop for it for at least a week. Pricing is based on some random formula, and you can find jewels buried from time to time, with more stuff and less cost.

My limit was $1000 each with shipping, and the best machine I got (a month or two ago) was a p4-1.4, 256MB, 80GB, GeForce2 MX, SB Live. Shipping was about $100.

Really last thing this time - price it through "home" and "small business" - you get charged less tax one way, and they have different specials.

we have a 8100...and it is head and shoulders above the 4100, :)

It uses the new kind of ram which is more expensive though, but 128mg has been fine for us you will be definately set w/256.

No need to worry about a refurb from dell, Dell will take care of any problems that may arise.

Hope this helps...

Bingo, it's all about timing. Do you guys know when the best time of month is best to order? Or best time of week or day?
