Friend ran a dell dimension for 2 months despite crashes/fan failure warnings. THe CPU fan is dead and it appears the CPU is too now as I can't even get into the BIOS.

I'm pretty sure that is the mobo.

The CPU has markings

P4 2.66 GHz 512 533
SL6PE Costa Rica
3333A221

Basically what I'm asking is, what kind of socket is this motherboard? I need to find the chip on newegg. Also, if I wanted to replace it with a faster chip, how fast can it go?

thx

ok sweet

Intel® Pentium® 4 with HT Technology that runs at 2.40, 2.60, 2.80, 3.00, or 3.20 GHz internally and 800 MHz externally or 2.26, 2.40, 2.53, 2.66, 2.80, or 3.06 GHz internally and 533 MHz externally

Man, I was just at fry's and they told me I couldn't use a 800 Mhz FSB chip. I assume they were wrong?

Can I get any 3.2 Ghz 478 pin w/ 800 Mhz FSB? It looks to me like I can.

not to be totally negative
but how can you say the cpu is bad if you don't know what it is ?
"therefore it has not been tested"

I would think even if the CPU was bad the fan would still work
or if the fan went out and then the CPU you might have a bad motherboard and CPU.

personally, with a Dell like that I'd be looking for bad capacitors on the motherboard first thing. you might be looking at just a bad motherboard which would be cheaper than a CPU if it weren't a Dell motherboard.

That answer your question? You are right I don't KNOW but it is highly probable given that info.

I replaced the CPU, computer is working fine now.

Good to hear you got a replacement so quickly
but No given what you've said doesn't answer why the problems started in the first place and also I would think with the size a those P4 heatsinks they could take some punishment, especially most Dells don't even have the fans directly on the heatsink, so they must think so too.

But any way glad you were able to get it so fast
