A customer brought in a Dell Dimension 4300 that is just out of warranty. The motherboard appears to have died and I need to replace it, but I know that you can't just buy a motherboard and expect it to work with the case.

Is there somewhere that I can get a replacement motherboard? Wlll Dell sell me one (albiet at a high price)? Are there any places that resell refurbs?

Thanks for any advice!

I took a look at PC Power & Cooling's PSU Configurator to see if the board comes up as using a standard ATX power supply. It does, so that means that the Dell's existing PSU should work with an aftermarket board.

From following along with this type of thing, I've picked up from johnjkr1 that some Dells use a remote circuitboard on the bezel that connects to the mobo via a ribbon cable. And that means it's depending on a particular front-panel header pinout, which could be a fly in the ointment. Additionally, if the case is the clamshell type, you may have physical clearance problems with an aftermarket board... one of my co-workers brought in her Dell from home, and what do you know, it has angled DIMM slots at the front edge of the board  Try finding THAT aftermarket. :p

You might PM johnjkr1 if he doesn't drop in here himself, and pick his brain :)

Edit: I guess the worst-case scenario would be to transplant as much of the Dell's guts as possible into a new ATX case, with a new mobo.

DSI wholsalers has a dell dimension 4300 board for $59.99. It's a refurb. Don't know what warranty it comes with. I found it in yahoo by typing "dell dimension 4300 motherboard".
