We have an old Dell Dimension 2300 as the "family computer" and today I went to dust it out and somehow the heatsink seemed to have broke off of the bracket. Both pieces that the heatsink connects to on one side broke right off. I guess it was having overheating problems previously, and I guess that is why.

So, I need a new bracket before I can even put a heatsink on. Where could I get this? While in the process of doing this I figured I'd get another heatsink and lose the duct Dell puts in it. Any suggestions here?

Also, currently it has a P4 1.8GHz CPU and 384MB of RAM. All my family uses it for is browsing the internet and stuff like that, but its current specs aren't cutting it. Should I buy a 512MB stick of RAM and throw it in there? Where could I buy cheap RAM? It seems like everything compatible with it is really expensive. Like $80 for only 512MB. Or would buying RAM just be a waste of money and they should sell it on eBay and build a cheap new system? Also, if you guys think it's best just to upgrade it case modding could always be fun. :)

Check eBay. I had "almost" the same problem with my Dell, and I got the bracket for around $5.00 or so.

My Dimension 2300's retention clip broke as well. I replaced it with this heatsink.

I like that it does away with the crappy plastic retention bracket completely. The downside is you have to remove the motherboard to install the new heatsink.

If you really want the bracket, I'm sure there are a ton on ebay.

If you want more ram, this is cheaper than $80.
Kingston 512mb <$65 shipped

The system's no gaming rig, but is fine for general computing usage (at least it's not a celeron).

I'll probably go with the heatsink you recommended. However, looking at the Dell motherboard, I don't see a second spot to plug in another fan. How would I get around this? Originally the heatsink was just a passive design so the only fan plugged in was the rear exhaust.

Also, I just posted in the WTB forum for RAM. I figured I could get it much cheaper there.
