Rats... I ordered a 3000 with 17" panel from the deal a couple of days ago for about the same price. Any idea if it is possible to cancel and reorder?

I ordered one and upgraded almost every item and still kept it under a grand before rebate. Not too bad with a 19" flat panel, printer and free shipping to boot.

probably too late to cancel via phone for now.

i would just refuse shipment, call dell to inform why you refused it & place a new order.

they shouldn't charge you anything

Why would you do that? The outrageous prices they charge for upgrades is ludicrous!

I'm recommending to a friend, that he buy the thing stripped, and upgrade later, as needed, via NewEgg.

I thought the same thing but DDR2 Ram is high and SATA drives are high so I wish I had maxed my 4700 out when I bought it. I would have saved quite a few bucks.

For their upgrade price, you can get it from NewEgg, and still have the original chip for another machine. That goes for the mouse, keyboard and the $60 upgrade price for the 160GB bumpup could be applied to a new drive for $20.00 more, and you still have the 40GB for backup.

They want over $100 to add a no-name DVD burner, come on!

You're kidding, right?

DDR2 works in 4700 and 8400 systems

Certainly you can find SATA drives cheaper than upgrading from dell.

The margins Dell gets on these discount systems is so low they have to make it up somewhere...

For some people, the warranty on all the parts centralized in one place is good enough, as long as it is one of the better warranties Dell offers. Also some don't have or don't want to pirate an operating system, among other software. Also other people have absolutely no means or time to shop around, open all the boxes and install all that stuff and if they hired someone to do it the savings is diminished. Some around here can't fathom the idea there are people in this world who choose not to know much about computers, thus can't do it themselves.

Still given Dell's track record on support the past two years I no longer recommend them the way I did in the past.

I must not have been too clear. I'd still buy the Dell, but get it stripped, and buy the upgrades later from NewEgg (or other Hot Deals) as needed. Dell will still warranty the machine they shipped out to you, just not the stuff you upgrade.

I showed a similar Hot Deal to another friend for $399. Later I found she upgraded all kinds of crap and bought it for $809.00! Holy shlt! Wasn't a hot deal by then!

I hven't looked at the price they are charging for upgrades lately. Based on the price they wanted in April when I bought mine I would have come out cheaper getting the upgrades for hard drive and memory from them.

Yeah I could have saved about $100 by getting my own 160GB HDD, a gig of memory, 48x CD-RW / DVD-ROM Combo Drive, X300SE video card and Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS. I also upgraded the XP Home to XP Pro and that would cost me about another what, $130 from another vendor for the OEM version?

In retrospect the only thing I might change now is to forego the graphics card upgrade to the Radeon X300 SE from the onboard graphics. I will probably wind up pulling the trigger on the X800 XL for $249 from Monarch, so that I am good to go when Q4 comes out. The $60 adder for the X300 SE could have gone towards the cost of the X800 XL.

Yeah, having no link is pretty lame.

You're forgetting something about this "upgrade" issue. For most parts, the upgrade price, is just about enough to buy the part from a third party outright. That leaves you with the part Dell ships with the stripped machine, AND the new part, instead of just the upgraded component.

LOL, I bet not. Ouch. But that's how Dell makes so much money.

Edit: By the way, I can potentially find someone a better deal on a more upgraded 4700. But I cannot say how here. ;)
