Dell defective battery return

We had 12 defective dell batteries at my office and my boss urged me to take them all and dispose of them until the replacements come in. I think he reacted out of urgency after seeing the office fire videos and wanted no part of the liability so I complied and threw them all away. I also remember a few guys on the boards saying that Dell did not want the old batteries back due to the UPS hazard return policy, etc. Today I get an email from Dell saying this...

"US customers may check the status of this order at www.dellbatteryprogram.com. All customers will receive email confirmation when their replacement battery is shipped. With that shipment, Dell will also provide a means for you to return the affected batteries for proper disposal."

So my question is, are we screwed? Will Dell charge us for the unreturned batteries?

call em up and ask, that usually helps

Thanks for all of the helpful info. i wanted to find out from you guys before i actually told them i've thown away all the batteries.

All batteries would be shipped by ground and don;t think they are hazardous when not connected to anything. So I would think Dell would not just hand out $70 batteries without getting some sore of proof you actually needed them.

I believe Dell is providing you with a box and label to ship the batteries to a recycling/waste center for proper disposal (you do know you're not supposed to just chuck batteries into the trash, right). All they need to do is look at your purchase order and see that you had a Sony battery. Even with that, I don't know that Dell is actually checking all that thoroughly, they'd rather err on the side of safety/caution.

Since it's only a tiny fraction of batteries that actually have the explodey issue, I'm just leaving the batteries with the guys who have them until the replacements arrive. Then... I dunno, I guess return them. If it was my own, I'd keep the original and risk it for a bicuit...

Ya, Dell usually gets people to ship damaged products back with the same box so I'm sure they will do the same with the batteries.

Thanks for the posts guys. I'm hoping it was just for safety reasons and not for proof that you had the battery to start with.

I'd really hate to see a bill for around $1300.

I just got my Mac Book Pro replacement battery and it said I would be charged if I did not return the old one ($121.11). Don't know if that is just a standard thing they put on the shipping or the "mean it". Just ordered a Dell one as well, but haven't gotten it yet.
