For $1600 you could build a system with twice the specs as those Dell...That is what is trying to be told to you! :D

Good luck ;)

I don't know about you, but I don't think I build a laptop;)

Anyways the second laptop is what I would go with, but I am sure you could find a better laptop deal right now than that.

always get the better screen since it's almost impossible to upgrade it once you get it. RAM and HDD can easily be upgraded.

good luck.

what kind of things do peop usually do with laptops???
me, i type Word, surf the net, chat. all i need is pent200mhz 64mb ram. 6gb drive.

its ridiculous with these new laptops with overkill specs. who on earth here do 3d rendering on the go... edit movies... play quake on their laptops? i hate it when they try to sell things you dont need. its worse that u cant find anything u need n have to shell out big bux! too bad i cant build ma own laptops. :(

I bought a Insipron 8000 about 2 months ago (refurb) for about $1420

Specs:
1ghz
256 MB ram
32 MB geforce2go
DVD drive
15" UXGA screen
20 gig HD

I'd say go with the second one for the sweet @ss screen. UXGA can't be beat! Especially watching dvd's. Just my 2 cents.

just wanted to throw in my two cents...currently typing out this post on a dell 8000 with the 14.1'' SXGA screen (1Ghz, 256MB, 20GB...)...the resolution is 1400 X 1050. choose your laptop with the resolution size in mind, like someone else said, it can not be upgraded once you decide. I have heard some people complain that the 1600 X 1200 is hard to read unless you have good eyesight.

tmv22, I agree that most computers are an overkill for what the average user does with it, but I could never use a pentium 200 even for the most basic websurfing...too slow for my tastes! 350-400Mhz, that is more reasonable...its too bad that finding a discounted laptop with lower specs is almost impossible...
