I have a Dell D830 laptop and am wondering if it's possible for the video chip to be fried and still put out a wonderful picture to an external display. The LCD has a pinkish hue and is very full of green dots. This is true even with a replacement display. However, I'm not sure that the replacement display is altogether good either. It came from a laptop with water damage. I have a third on the way, hoping that will solve it.

Still, the question about the external display being good remains.
It's running Vista, fully updated and running the nVidia website's driver.

Thanks, Barry

If the connector from the GPU to the laptop screen is borked it would still function fine when plugging into a hdmi/vga etc etc port. If you are getting the same results with 2 screens you probably shouldn't have ordered a third...

The ribbon cable going to the LCD is damaged most likely. Although it could also be the converter board that converts the signal from the video card to the LCD.

But if external display works fine, its not the video card.

I'm a glutton for punishment. I got each screen for roughly $50.
I am just thinking that screen #2 was from a water damaged laptop so the cable or screen circuitry might have gotten messed up. Also, two different LCD cables could have the same wear so. . .

One would hope so! The thing is that it didn't work well with Windows 7 but does work well with Vista though it should make no difference. After this next screen I'm giving up and parting it out. Too bad since it's a fairly nice laptop. Works quite well otherwise.

Well, I'm stumped. 3rd time is not a charm. I believe the card to be fried no matter whether or not it puts a nice picture to an external display. Damn shame. Seems to be a good computer otherwise.
