Dell CPU's

There is a Dell at work that is being used to hold files and such for the company. It is a Vostro with a E7400. I am thinking about replacing it with an E5200 and seeing if the E7400 will get me a decent OC.

So I guess my question is whether Dell gets chips that don't have a very high ceiling for OC'ing?

I would be putting this in a backup computer, so I don't exactly need tons of performance, I just want to OC a chip that is otherwise doing nothing. But if I already know it won't OC worth a crap, I won't waste my time.

The CPU's dell uses are OEM's.

So its the same luck draw if they are good or bad OCers.

If it means anything to ya, i pulled a E6300 a while back ago from a dell, and overclocked that puppy to 3.6ghz without much problems.

50% overclock on a chip is not considered bad at all.

Make sure the e7400 system is past its warranty period - if something goes wrong they certainly will not honor anything if the cpu has been swapped.

The only reason Dells aren't known for overclocking is because there are zero OC options in the BIOS on the motherboards used in their systems. The only way to overclock a Dell is through a BSEL mod of the cpu itself. But in your case this won't be an issue as you plan to put the e7400 into a different motherboard (obviously not an OEM motherboard) so this chip should overclock as well as anything out there.
