Dell computer RAM Upgrade

can I buy any brand/type of ram for a Dell computer? For example a GX270 takes PC3200 ram.

but can i stick in any type or different brand of ram for this as long as it's PC3200? dell suggests to use kingston, but only gives you a few options for compatible ram from kingston. I want to know if I can use different kingston or even different brand of ram. For example, can I use OCZ value ram in this thing? or can I use a different kingston stick than the one they suggest?

Depends on which Dell it is. The low end ones aren't too picky, any old generic RAM is fine. The higher end ones (8 series, 9 series, and XPS) really don't like generic RAM. I wouldn't go asking on the Dell forums. They will all automatically tell you to get the standard grade Crucial, which is fine, but it's more expensive than other brand name RAM. OCZ does make value RAM that's guaranteed to work. Corsair value RAM should be ok too. Only their standard grade RAM is guaranteed to work, but cases of Corsair VS not working are fairly few. Kingston should be fine too.

crucial.com RAM is guaranteed to work if you use their memory selector

"performance" RAM is usually pointless since almost all Dells offer little or no tweaking options

This is the response you tend to see a lot if you ever visit the Dell forums. In reality OCZ, Corsair, and Kingston all have memory configurators for Dell models that show you compatible RAM.
