I like gateway - I cashed in on the server deal that they had a while back, and it's great. Solid as a rock!

I've heard compaq makes solid servers, (unlike their poor presario line)

But, I guess out of them all, I would choose dell, because they make solid products, and when you have a server, it has to be solid!

I heard complaints with all of them ! These are what I heard...

Heard compaq was best but over price

Dell is okay but bad documentation, not too much knowledge

HP is lacking

Gateway is a ?

I only work with dells and compaq.. almost a gateway...

I just want a few of those APPRO's 1124 760MP Server's that Anand reviewed a while back. Looked mighty sweet. ;)

I second windogg's opinion. While Dell is not bad Compaq is definatly the way to go for servers. Note this does not apply to desktops where I would definatly recommend Dell. But compaq ownes for servers.

BTW windogg knows what he's talking about. If anything you should listen to him. (Coincidently we both reccomnended the same thing.)

Compaq hands down.
Their x86 servers are second to none.

Oh and Leon, seems like that deal might just crash and burn ;)

Running Compaq servers here.. very solid and reliable.. trouble-free and fast.. They are quite nice at least the ones we have here. (not sure of their model or exact specs) I'd vote Compaq because of these though!

We use a mix of Compaq and Dell here at work. I don't have much experience with the Compaq, but I have been VERY impressed with the Dell on-site support. If you are talking business-level servers, then I'd say Dell does a good job. If you are talking about a server for home-use or small business file sharing, then I'm not sure. That 4-hour response on-site support doesn't come cheap I'm sure, so it's probably not practical for home or small business use.

But, Dell stuff is black, which makes it SO much cooler than anything else (aside from maybe Sun...)

Being a Systems Engineer for a Fortune 5 company for the past 11 years, and having used all 4, I cast my vote for Compaq. They are well engineered, very well thought out, top notch tech support and their remote monitoring and support tools are unmatched. Yes, they are expensive and you really need to stick with Compaq memory and disks if you want a good experience. (they rigorously test each item before selling) I am currently responsible for over 300 servers and the only problems I have with any of them are the occasional drive failure. All of my machines have at least 2 drives, most have 4-5 and about 40 have over 10 drives attached - we lose about one drive a month and those are usually on the older machines. (All Raid so who cares.)

I'm going to pile on the Compaq bandwagon, too. In the last 2 companies I've worked (Systems Admin at both places w/ a total of 11 Compaq servers), I have had 0 problems with the Compaq Proliant series servers. They boot slow as hell, but they have been 100% reliable. I wouldn't risk using any other.

I have 3 Dell servers running a very critical part of our company sitting in a 42 unit Dell rack with a slide out keyboard/monitor.
I have been very impressed with their speed, realibality and price. We were running Data General servers in the area that the Dells replaced and it was a definate move in the right direction.

Data General are horriable servers.

Another vote for Compaq. Their consumer line (Presario) is crap,
but their business stuff is top rate. Their workstations are also
excellent. All better than Dell IMHO.

HP makes good stuff too in the workstation line (Kayak, Visualize)
and business desktops (Vectra, Brio). Their home stuff is, like
Compaq's, crappy. I think for upper end _servers_ Compaq beats
HP. But I wouldn't call HP crappy. Just outclassed at that end.
