Dell Case Fan has gone loud

after only 4 years 😛

i'm wondering what i should replace it with.

i replaced the PSU fan with a vantec stealth (only thing i had onhand) after i damaged the old one slamming my hand on the desk. now the case fan has gone.

in these dells, the single, sole, and solitary case cooling fan (exhaust) doubles as the CPU fan (with a duct over it, pulling air through the heatsink)

i'm wondering what kind of fan i can get away with in there?

80mm only, and there's no thermal probes on the motherboard readable in any way. so i cant tell what temp it's at now.

sidewindercomputers.com and bgmicro.com often have dell OEM fans that could possibly be direct replacements, weird connectors and all.

direct replacement is so much of a bother to me, i can solder the wierd connector. and the direct replacements i see for sale go in the range of 40-50 dollars...

the assembly hasnt gone bad, just the fan. i'm just wondering what i can get by with in terms of cfm, rpm.

Well the companies I mentioned don't inflate the prices like that. The prices some of those sites try to sell used or "refurb" fans for is ridiculous just because some (working with OPM) will pay it. allelectronics.com usually has quite a few fans too and sometimes has OEM ones at reasonable prices. Might look at thermalfx.com too.

buy cheap medium speed fan, anything will do probably. if it starts to crash well you know it needs faster fan but thats doubtful, dells tend to be reasonably quiet so the fans aren't going to be crazy fast

i dont' bother with solder, i just cut wires and crimp with connector😛

just got a vantec thermoflow, cause it's all they had at frys. but it's got a slightly higher RPM and noise than i really care to have.. so i'm gonna volt mod it.

i assume i need some kind of resister in the 12v power line to cut down the power to like 9 volts?

gonna cut the wires, and since i already have a soldering gun, and need the practice, gonna solder it anyways. 😛

A bit late to be telling you this now, but the direct replacement OEM fans from Sidewinder computers are only about $5-$10...depending on the time of year.

I got two of these NMB fans for my computer and at the time they only ran me $6 each...these are the EXACT SAME fans that were in an older dell I had...and they have built in thermistors so no need to voltmod
