dell c800 doesn't display windows properly

i never work on laptops but my friend wanted me to do a new install of windows 2000 pro on his c800.

in bios, the entire screen displays properly but right when windows boots, the login screen on, it's all displayed with a ~3" black border. i don't see any setting in the normal places (display tools, control panel etc) and i don't see anything in bios that would limit it.

anyone know what i'm missing?

Do you have the video drivers installed? Is it running at the correct resolution?

i assumed the drivers would be on the dell installation disc but maybe i'm wrong. i'll check that out.

the res changes inside the box but doesn't change the box itself. it leaves the border the same.

bleh, you were right, it needs a driver.

i d/l the ati driver from dell but it errors out. "INF" error is the first pop up and then it says on anotherpop uip

"setup was unable to complerte the installation. try to setup your display adapter with a standard vga driver before running setup"

😕

i browsed the windows 2000 install disc but i can't find any drivers :|

any help? whats a "standard vga" driver?

btw, the dell d/l said its for a mobility3/mobilty4. i don't see any mobility products listed on amd's site?

edit agian, how are the drivers not on dells disc? i must be missing something. i haven't owned a pre-built in 5 years or so but i thought all the intall discs had everything you needed.

of course, i never owned a lappy :Q and i don't mind helping friends but i so get pissed whn things just get fropped off. i've got another friends desktop here too. pita...

You are absolutely positive that it is AMD? Also, have you gone to Windows Update? They might have the standard VGA driver that you are looking for.

in bios its listed as an "ati m4". i'll see if windows got anything. i'm surprised there is nothing on the install disc though.

That is a little weird. I seem to remember that my old dell had drivers on the disk, strange that this one wouldn't. If you are able to get online, have you tried going to Dell's site for the drivers?

i'm such a n00b 😛

my friend neglected to give me the application/driver disk which is seperate from the installation disk in this case. it's all set now.

thanks for keeping me company anyway, Stu 🙂
