Dell C400 pretty nice, but USB is 1.1 and funky

About 10 days into shopping for small laptop to take on a trip and let my son use as a basic system for high school next year. Dell C400 was really looking good, used prices are still kind of high compared to low end new laptops (around $350 for a nice one), but I just found out it uses a very problematic USB port that is 1.1 with power issues. Phooey. Deal killer is that it won't boot from USB so you MUST have the matching Dell external drives and media cable, which is useless otherwise.

Back to square one, and adios I think to any plans for a ultracompact on a budget.

I added Omnibook to my searches along with dell and thinkpad in notebooks.

1.0+ Ghz would be nice, but in a pinch I think we could live with 700 mhz, but I am seeing the Omnibooks and Thinkpads in general much more bare than the Dells.

Check out the HP NC4010, or other NC4000 models. At the time of this posting there was one for $430 or so shipped on ebay and it still has some warranty remaining. It's just a little over your price range, but it's a centrino model and many of them are still under their original 3yr warranty.

I think I am going to bite on the first decent Dell D400 that they can ship quickly via priority mail (right now the saturday delivery could be a lifesaver).
