If Dell has that kind of power coming out (DELL!), I can only imagine what Apple has in the works...whoohoo! 😀

One thing in particular that struck me as interesting was the amount of RAM on each machine...8gb? 16gb? Right off the bat, that means there HAS to be 4gb chips around the corner, something I've been waiting for for a LONG time! It also introduces the possibility that there may be 8gb chips, unless the M6400 has 4 memory slots, which I've never seen in a laptop. I've seen dual 500gb drives (Sager, MCEtech upgrade kits, etc.) but never more than two memory slots on a single laptop motherboard.

Additionally, the 17" has the new 1GB VRAM graphics card. That sounds pretty awesome! They also have Quad-core chips. There are some pretty hefty laptops right now that run the Q6600 and other quad-core desktop chips, but I'd imagine these are going to be running the new "Extreme" Quad-core mobile chips from Intel. They are also touting the graphics capability of their LED screens, saying they cover 100% of the Adobe color space.

Oh, and "sleeker, minimalist design" - pave the way for lower-powered mobile quad-cores, yippie! 😀

Cliff's:
New Dell laptops have crazy specs:
+ 2 x 500gb (RAID-capable)
+ LED LCD screens with 100% Adobe color space
+ Up to 16gb of RAM
+ Up to 1gb VRAM
+ Quad-core processors

Since its Apple they prolly will have the low end of all this stuff and charge us twice as much.

The one thing PC companies are good for is innovation, especially when it comes to power. Apple wont do any of that probably because it goes against their "aesthetic".

(I am no Apple griefer either, I own a 3 month old Pernyn MBP, I'm just disillusioned by Jobs and the company - still love the product itself).

They look cool but you're stuck using Vista/XP...

The point is that if Dell has it, Apple will have it soon as well (to some extent).

Well the MSI Wind runs Leopard perfectly, and is only $549 for the 6-cell model (compared to $1800 for the Air). 10" LED with Bluetooth, add 802.11n for $40 and up to a 500gb hard drive...

Really?

That's interesting...is there a PCIe slot for the wireless card?

Yup...you can use either the Dell 1500n or the official Apple 802.11n card if you want N. Otherwise any compatible 802.11g card will work (the stock card inside the Wind isn't Leopard-compatible). There's actually a pre-made Leopard installer disc for the Wind, details here:

http://forums.msiwind.net/mac/...for-msi-wind-t857.html

As far as upgrades go, the first thing is the wireless. Second is the RAM. It comes with 1gb soldered in and room for another 1gb stick, so all you need to do is pick up is a 1gb 667mhz from Newegg for around $20 (800mhz will work too). It won't take more than 2gb, but I wouldn't recommend running Leopard on only 1gb so definitely spend the $20! Third upgrade option is the hard drive. Unlike the $1800+ MacBook Air, this MSI Wind actually has a standard 2.5" hard drive. This means you can put up to a 500gb 5400rpm hard drive in or even a 320gb 7200rpm drive in if you want. Or even a 2.5" SATA SSD!

Aside from the replaceable default card, the only other thing that doesn't work is the line input/output and onboard mic. This means no headphones or mic input, however - the solution is a simple $8 USB sound card: (thanks Zaap for posting it!)

That's useful if you want to use a mic since the Webcam mic doesn't work (just onboard speakers). Bluetooth and USB headsets also work, of course. So pretty much the Wind is the "missing Mac ultraportable" - LED screen, Bluetooth, Webcam, full-sized laptop hard drive, Wifi, Bluetooth, 10" screen, 3 and 6-cell configurations (2.5 and 5.5 hours and 2.3 and 2.6 pounds respectively), and come in White, Black, and Pink (no extra premium for the Black! haha). Oh and it comes with Windows XP Home if you want to dual-boot 🙂

Also, you can try to get 2-finger scrolling like on a real Mac here, although most users say the trackpad is waaaaay too small for even normal use and thus get a small mouse:

If newegg has 4GB sticks for $ 480.00 the Apple "approved" memory should be close to $ 1200.00. But sleep well knowing Apple has tested it and approved it for OSX.

They have a new promo video out:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/0...p-with-16gb-of-memory/

That really looks awesome...they say you can use dual 30" monitors, that's INSANE from a laptop! 😀 From the video, it looks like the 16gb of memory is actually four 4gb sticks, so it looks like we won't be seeing 8gb sodimms anytime soon 🙁 I really hope this can be Hackintoshed, haha...

Is there a problem with that ? I dual boot with Ubuntu & Vista. Open mind please.
