Dell 9100 and Core 2 Duo?

Hi all,

I bought a Dell 9100 a little over a year ago. At that time, there's an option for the system, either a P4 3.0ghz HT or a 2.8 Pentium D. I think the socket type is 775 LGA. As most of you know already, games today are taking advantage of the multi cores processors. So, I wanted to do some upgrading. Is it possible to buy a Core 2 Duo processor and pop it in? or do I have to really wait for the next upgrade?

Thanks

If you're referring to the laptop, then no.

If the desktop, then it's possible, but I doubt that the chipset is C2D compatible.

Your mobo will allow both 3.0HT and Pentium D. Although I think you already have a HT processor it must be a Intel 500 Series IF you want you can upgrade to a Dual core Pentium D. I would go for a Intels' D 945 its cheap and fast. 2.8 is not a bad idea but i dont think it will make much difference as compared to you existing 3.0 or 3.2 HT.

If you are dead sure that your existing CPU is not a HT then also I would go for a Pentium D rather than a HT as they are almost the same price.

You cannot upgrade to a Core 2 Duo for that you will have to change the mobo and maybe i am wrong but i have heard that people have had lots of bad experiences which changing a mobo on a dell...

Thanks for the info, I i'm sure that my existing cpu is HT. But I really wanted the C2D. I guess I have to wait for the next upgrade then.

Just a sugession - I had a Intel 530 (3.0 GHz HT) and i replaced it with 945(dual core 3.4). The difference is just unbelievable. Everything is significantly faster. You will get atleast 80 for your CPU at Ebay and a new 945 is around 170, so for 100 you will get awsome upgrade.

Upgrading to a dual-core CPU can make a huge difference. For about $250, you can get a 6300 and a good motherboard to go with it - odds are, your CPU will fetch $70, and your motherboard another $30 on top, so assume $150 for an impresisve boost in speed.
