I agree with shell guy....

Try this...

ask him to give you the system tag of the particular machine he will be sending to you. Go to dell's support site, key in the system tag, and click on the "config when new" link. It ll tell you what was the original config of the machine. Then check out the warranty details. The warranty starts from the invoice date.. so that way ur sure of the age of the machine...

That is if he gives u the system tag....

I think 8600 with 9600 only began selling in europe around end october, early november 2003... so it cant be too old anyway....

Beware of hacked accounts... I had one experience - a spaniard wanted me to pay through western union - I searched google, and it turned out to be a blatant by-the-book scam. And the guy had 100% feedback.

But if it's through paypal, you should be safe(r).

You will NOT be safe through paypal, especially if the buyer doesn't offer buyer protection. I would ask you to give us the link to this paypal auction, and we'll be able to help you figure if this guy is the real thing or not.

If anything, you should pya through credit card, which definately offers you protection.

Really there is no way i can tell to be able to say for sure that he is going to send. I got burned buying Transcenders about the same way. I can't see why he doesn't use paypal it is a great tool. And I trust it a whole lot more than i do Western Union. All i could say is first contact ur CC company and see what they will do if he doesn't ship. If they will cover you then go ahead and do it. If they won't then be very careful. Can you post the link to ur auction?

There was no auction. Here is an email he sent me

have ten units available with the safe configurations. I can offer you a
laptop at $1450 shipping included. If you are realy interested I will
contact eBay about our deal. I have to go to pick someone at the
trainstation and I'll be back in an hour. If you have something to tell me
I'll wait your email. My location is Berlin, Germany. Keep in touch.

He said he will contact ebay. Earlier this mourning i got mail from ebay shown above in my edit. I will call ebay and see what they will do about it if he doesnt ship. Does ebay even have a phone number? Well i have to go to church to pray for my laptop....be back in an hour!
PLEASE POST ANYTHING THAT WILL HELP

unless this is stolen, or bought off the assembly line, i would be alarmed.

I have a inspiron 8600, 1.6ghz, WSXGA, 60gig 7200 rpm, DVD+RW, R9600 and 512 pc2700. With the MINIMAl software package, and MINIMAL support and warrenty it was $2000 over christmas.

Now i suppose this would have a 5400rpm, a WGXA, and a CDRW and possibly no OS.... but for 600 dollars less..... hmmmmm

i think i will do business with this guy. He told me i could pay half now and half when i recieve it. Here is the email. \

We will use Western Union for this transaction. I usualy use paypal but I
have asked for an upgrade and now I can't send or receive money. I
understand your concern but as you saw Ebay insures this deal and you can
see that I'm a trusted ebayer. The only thing that I can do for you is
that I can accept for you to send me half before you receive it and half
after you got it and check it but after you receive it you must send the
other half in max 24 hours. I wait for your email.

PS: hey abdi where is the tab number for the laptop located?

He says the tag is inside of the box and he cant open it.

The laptop is inboxed and I can't open it. When you'll receive it you can
check the system tag and send the other half. I already compromised with
you for half the amount although eBay knows that we do this for the entire
amount and they insure it all, not half. You can send the payment with
your credit card at http://www.westernunion.com online. After you send it
to my name you'll have to email me the transfer info: MTCN#-money transfer
control number, sender's name and address. Here you have my full info:

DON'T DO IT! I hope you haven't done it yet.. It sounds 100% like the guy who tried to scam me.
I really thought the auction was legit, because it was on the front page of ebay - it even said on the auction page, that the guy was an "eBay trusted partner" etc etc...

It sounds _extremely fishy_ to me

1) It's a very low price
2) Western Union (telltale sign)
3) Crucial number is "unfortunately" inside the box
4) Agrees to go half n half = tries to win your trust this way ... I have never been able to go half n half with any legit sellers

Try to ask him, if you can transfer with credit card, through paypal, whatever - anything other than Western Union.

And if it's so damned cheap, why doesn't he sell to his countrymen? Why take the hassle of selling across borders? They should be easy to unload..

Why get it when a new one is comparably priced and you can configure it the way you like it. Aside from Dell having all kinds of special deals there are often coupons that can make it a great deal. We used one yesterday that had 10% off

The other BS fishy thing about this is I recently bought a refurbed 8600 and my brother bought a brand new 8600 too and BOTH of the boxes they came in had their service tags clearly visbible on several locations on the boxes.

Dude. the pay half now, half later is typical. TRUST ME! It's a scam. My co-worker almost got had on one of these scams. It was the EXACT same scenario...different country...Western Union etc. Your money bro, but don't come whining later when you get bent over. Do a little digging up on google.

What, are you an idiot? This is a well known scam. Anybody who asks you to use western union is going to screw you over. The only people who use western union legitimately are illegal immigrants sending money back to mexico.
