Dell 700m speaker controls

Got a 700m for my wife, she loved everything about it, until she turned on the speaker to listen to her favorite musics. The sound is flat and high pitched like AM radio, and sounds all squeaky and weird at high volume and high frequency.

Well, I lowered the Wave output so that it doesn't squeak at high freq, but we noticed that the tone controls for Bass and Treble are grayed out, even with the most current audio driver. Is it possible to adjust it?
