Dell 700m dedicated graphics

Why does the Dell 700m no have interated graphics?

After doing some research it seems like the mainboard is shared by other laptops and tablet PCs that offer a dedicated graphics controller (like the Compaq TC1100 tablet).

If it a matter of room, well maybe? But it seems like there should be a port in there somewhere, if indeed it fits on the motherboard?

For the record, I have NEVER seen it.

What do you think?

The 700M is the pre-Sonoma 855GME chipset. The version with dedicated graphics would be the 855PM. Are you suggesting that the Compaq TC1100 uses the same board with the 855PM chipset?

What is the TC1100? I don't see it on hpshopping.com.

I think he meant to ask in his post why the 700m doesn't use discrete graphics.
Two reasons: cost and power. Discrete graphics cost more; the 700m is a pretty budget laptop.
Discrete graphics use more power: for a 12" semi-ultraportable notebook, battery life is a major concern.

Open Taco,

That does answer my question. I thought they used the same mainboard. I understand that the 700m is a budget ultraportable with portability and battery life major concerns. However, that is not an issue (in my experience) with the aftermarket modding communities.

You do know if there is a physical port to put a discrete graphics card in the 700m? I don't care if there is physical space to accomodate it, or if it is accessible (I am NOT going to put one in). I am just wondering if there is?

I suppose once the warrantee runs out and I get another portable, I will not mind opening it up. That is a year or more away.

I am just curious if it is possible.

EDIT: I have been searching Intel's database about the 855GME mainboard and chipset, but can not find anything about discrete graphics. Most likely does not exist, but if you find anything different. LMK.

The GME chipset does not support discrete graphics at all, there is no AGP port. I believe only the 855PM chipset supports AGP 4x.

Why do internet searches?

I mean, I just looked at the source. Intel's homepage has the details on what their mainboards have and have not! Good read for good information. I should have looked there first.

Thanks.
