Dell 600M White Screen

1.4 year old (1 yr warr) dell 600m. Laptop runs fine, but randomly the screen will go white. When I plug into a external monitor, the laptop is still running but the lcd is white. It will randomly come back into picture for no reason. If I want to make the laptop screen go white fast, I can boot it, then go into "suspend" and while comming out of suspend the laptop screen will then be white (but good on external monitor). I took the lcd out of the bezel and checked all connection points and all are seated properly even the one behind the lcd itself. Also, It does not seem to be a Driver problem as sometimes I can turn it on and it will imediadiatly be a white screen and never even see the bios.

Anyone have any ideas? I have the latest bios and even flashed the latest over itself and no changes. I tried ram and with/without batter, same.

Thanks

No warrantee. I checked ebay for an inverter, and I see that one says this "Before you replace that LCD, an inverter replacement can fix some problems like Greenish color, faint or no backlight". Is the white screen a sympton of a bad inverter? If so i'll grab one asap. Thanks John

A white display on a LCD panels generally indicates
a problem with the Flex cable (or the panel itself - i.e. LCD not recieving power)

The white you see is the backlight glowing (indicating the inverter is working).

What do you think my next step would be in trouble shooting this? Is there anything I can try, or do I have to start replacing part, and which parts would this be? Thanks

Your best bet is to look on eBay for a Flex Cable.
They are running about $10-$20 dollars. (seen used ones as low as .89 cents + shipping)
(Part No. 6M871 for a 14.1" display)

If that does not fix the problem then you have a decision to make.
Invest in a expensive LCD Panel or use the money towards something new.

LiLthTech...i installed the flex cable and its been about 7 days, and so far the laptop has not had any issues. Looks good, fingers crossed still. Only costed $15 bux. Thanks

Hi, I have the exact same prob you mentioned regarding the white screen. It happens very rarely, maybe once every couple months, however when it does it is very annoying and I have to end up waiting a couple hours before it will work again. I just ordered a flex cable for $10 and we'll see what happens once that gets here. I never noticed the problem coming out of standby however twice I have noticed a 'pre-symptom' I guess you could say. I would boot up the machine and about 3/4 of the way through boot up (when the tray icons are loading) the machine will become almost non-responsive. Enough to the point where I will have to do a hard shutdown. Both times this has happened, the next time I reboot the screen is white. Quite strange. Anyway, will update once the new flex cable is installed.
