OK, so I wanna buy a Dell 600m, but I've heard that Dell is adding new laptops to their inspiron series. I know about 2 weeks ago they added the 300m, but i'm lookin for something a bit stronger, something that works for gaming. So should i buy the 600m now or should i hold out a little longer? btw i leave for college in about a month, so i need to buy soon.

thx
Joe

edit: heh i can't type

well as any computer product...you could wait forever. i'm in the same boat you are as in i start college back up in about a month and will be getting a new laptop. my understanding is, nothing new is gonna be coming out within the next month. the only advantage of waiting a little longer is that you will get more bang for you buck...maybe. a month really isn't THAT long but in technology it can be. i'm gonna wait until right before I go back to college.

what games are you looking to play?
my 600m with 1.4ghz proc, 640m ram, 64m vid card plays games like neverwinter nights and morrowind pretty well. I'm not big into shooters though. How many fps do you really need if lcds are restricted to 60 refresh rate? Or have laptop lcds gotten better with that yet?

Well it sounds like the majority of you think I should just buy my computer now, so i'll probably purchase a 600m on monday. But i got another question: How long do you think it'll take dell to bring the centrino technology over to the desktop replacements?

thx again

I don't think they will bring centrino to the desktop, or at least not for quite some time. P-M's are much more expensive and a harder sell on the general population ("what do you mean a 1.3ghz processor is the same as a 2.0ghz one???"). After using high mhz as a selling point vs AMD I think they sold most of the consumers that higher mhz is better.

As for buying just because people tell you to, it may be easier that way. In 2-3 months when something new comes out you can always come by and blame us for talking you into it =). Of course something new is ALWAYS comming out in 2-3 months.

P.S. College + Laptop = buy a lock.
Lock the sucker to your wrist, just to be safe.

I'll second that question. I've called them numerous times and I've been told august repeatedly. Dell doesn't do pre-orders so we won't see it on the site until it's available.... speaking of available, Sager is shipping an m10 equipped laptop on the 22nd (as are the other clevo brands), so I'd presume that dell isn't far behind.... at least that's what I'd like to think.

For gaming Dell's Inspiron 8500 or D800 are both better than the D600 (when you equip them with a Geforce 4 4200).

The Inspiron 8500's the best deal, at roughly $700+ cheaper than a D800 (and they look like the same thing with different processors, as near as I can tell).

I'm pretty shocked Dell isn't shipping anything with a Geforce 5600 or Radeon 9600 yet. They're usually first to use new GPUs, and they're two and a half months behind some of the store brands. I don't think the Geforce 4 4200 is all that much worse than a 5600 though (and it wastes the 5200 if I've remembering correctly).

yeah, that's what I've been thinking too. If it's taking dell this long to catch up with some store brands they gotta be working on something super good =), well that or they're just falling behind. What do you guys think?

I was told they'd be introducing a number of new laptops in early september. That was from a Dell sales associate - so maybe he's full of it - I'm not sure.

really!?...hmm, now i really don't know what to do. If i buy now i might regret it a week later. I know things are always gettin better, but if i buy it now and dell offers new laptops a few days later, that would stink, really bad. argh! what to do...

The Inspiron 8600 should be coming REALLY SOON now, if you didn't see that other thread. If you're looking at something lower-end like the D600 I don't know that that's going to up upgraded that soon.

oh...I was actually lookin at the 600m, but the only reason i never considered the 8500 is because it didn't have the centrino technology in it, yet....well thx for the heads up!

the 8600 has centrino FYI
the dell UK site already has them available so you can go see what's offered. I think they are offering the new nVidia graphics, but not the ATI 9600

They'll probably put it up over the weekend I guess, or early next week. I doubt they will have any good deals on it for a few weeks though. Reap in the tons of money from the early adopters that have been waiting for a good directX 9 laptop.
