Dell 4700c power supply

I have a dell dimension 4700 and just upgraded my video card to an ATI X800XL. It recommends a 350w power supply and doesnt state what the minimum is. Not checking mine before I bought it, I found out that I only have a 305w supply. I need to know if you can get replacement power supplies for a dell or if they have some crazy stuff in there that wont let you, and if there is one where can I get it and make sure that it will work in my system. I would like to put a 450w or 500w power supply in to eliminate any power issue's. I have a pentium motherboard and processor 2.8g. If anyone knows anything that would help or needs more info let me know please. How do I tell if my case is an ATX or not and what psu will fit. The psu I have now is 5.9x5.4x3.7.

To be honest with you, I have a DELL and their power supplies are way UNDERATED! There is now way that you PSU is actually giving out 150W. My power supply says 300W and I have added ALOT of things to it and it runs great.

Before you buy a new powers supply try out your video card and see how stable it is first.

Heres what I have on my stock 300W PSU:

2 SATA HDs
X800XL
4 added 80mm fans
Audigy soundblaster card
DVD burner
CD burner
2- 12" UV bulbs

And it runs VERY stable and has been tested with a meter.

So all Im saying is just TRY it and see what happens.

Yeah, I agree with grimly. Testing it won't hurt. If it doesn't have enough power to drive it, your computer will turn off and the video card will make this incredibly loud and annoying alarm sound. I accidently turned off the secondary power supply before the first died, and that is when I found out the the 2nd PSU was powering the video card. Freaked out for a second, turned everything off, and then turned everything back on without a problem.
Tas.

I'm obviously using my computer to game on and I'm able to play for about 30 mins and then my computer freezes up and the screen turns bright blue and I'm unable to do anything. If the psu is not the problem then what is and how do i test the psu. my computer is a 4700 not a 4700c which is the compact one. It also has a 305w max which i found on dell.com. but once again how do I test it.

It should work. Since you have a P4, the maximum load should be around 280 watts with that video card. My AMD 64 winchester is pulling 200 watts MAX. Your biggest problem will be HEAT since those tiny DELL cases do not vent well. If you encounter video related issues, then run the case wide open. If the problem goes away, then you need to add a fan to the case. Those cheap DELLs are not made for high-end gaming.

note, many dells do not use standard ATX psu's, the pin out for their 20 and 24 pin connectors are different, using a standard ATX psu will also void your warranty.

can you elaberate on the pin? 20 and 24. the dell that I have (4700) has a 24 pin connector. Ive looked up graghs for psu's and the one im looking at uses a 24 pin connector does that mean that the psu i have now is ATX.
