Dell 4700c power supply

I have a dell dimension 4700 and just upgraded my video card to an ATI X800XL. It recommends a 350w power supply and doesnt state what the minimum is. Not checking mine before I bought it, I found out that I only have a 305w supply. I need to know if you can get replacement power supplies for a dell or if they have some crazy stuff in there that wont let you, and if there is one where can I get it and make sure that it will work in my system. I would like to put a 450w or 500w power supply in to eliminate any power issue's. I have a pentium motherboard and processor 2.8g. If anyone knows anything that would help or needs more info let me know please.

Well first off I'd like to recommend a 400W~460W Power Supply. You can shop for any brand you like because 90% of the power supplies out there have a universal fit. Like my old MDG computer, it had a stock 200W power supply and I replaced it with a 500W power supply. Both of these Power supplies were the exact same size, and had the exact same number of cables.

do you have any recommendations on a good brand and does it have to be pentium approved to work with the motherboard

Ok this is an ATX Power supply. Is your computer CASE ATX or AT?

ATX is only compatible with ATX and vice versa.

Note: If you case is ATX, then yes this would work with your computer.

I'd try the existing Dell PSU first (especially if it's still under warranty or you may void the warranty by replacing the PSU). It may not be adequate for an 800x but you'll find out quick if you get lockups in games.

Yes a 350watt PSU is the recommended minimum, but Dell uses quality components and if you only have a single CD and HDD in the system there's probably ample power for the video card.

Older Dells used to use PSUs with non-standard ATX plugs, but most of the newer Dells all use standard ATX or ATX12. No way to know until you compare the color of the wires with a standard PSU, but you can find out by visiting Dell's user forms and doing a search on "4700 PSU".

There is another company, a little lower priced, that makes PSU's for Dell comps, but I can't remember the name. Do as FlyingPenguin says, and check out Dell Dimension support forum. Dell power supplies are supposedly under reported as far as their power is concerned, however, and yours may work with the card.

For future reference Dell's website is pretty good about giving info about your system. Your service tag input where it's asked for can give you just about all the specs you need for your computer to upgrade or replace parts (usually).
