Anyone able to get redhat to install successfully on a dell inspiron 4150. I tried two different sets of CD's one with redhat 9.0 and the other 7.2, both of them it just hangs - the CD's are fine - ive tried them in other desktops - the only thing that I can think of is that I might have to update the bios - laptop is only 10 months old.

Anyone with success - specifically on the 4150 - if someone tells me yes - then ima send the lappy back to dell and let them deal with it. BTW its the 24x combo cdrw/dvd drive.

thanks

why don't you give us some more information? For example, does it hang during installation, you can't get passed an specific part of the installation.

If the CDs won't work in any other PC then they're defective so try burning them at a lower speed. If its a hardware problem then try this site.

I agree with Spyro

Oh I forgot when you boot with the Red Hat installation disk you can test the media. To check the disk press F2 at the menu. An installer option will appear. Then input and confirm "linux media check".

This is something that you should do before starting the installation of Red Hat. You can do the check on Red Hat 9.0, but I don't know if it is also available in the older version that you have.

I hope this helps,

Well the problem is that I dont get even as far as the boot loader screen - it just gives me a flashing cursor when i put in the first CD and reboot the system. You can hear it spin up and spin down. I thought perhaps the CD's were defective so I burned another set - same problem - I didn't think of burning at a slower speed. The CD's do work perfectly fine on two other desktop systems I have - but not on the laptop.

Any ideas?

thanks

just to rule out the obvious:
1. do you have your pc set up so it will boot out of the cd-rom
2. have payed close attenttion when it boots because sometimes you have to press a key to begin installation otherwise the installation won't begin.

also what video card do you have?
