Hey all, just got a Dell 400SC and it can't seem to find drivers for the USB controller.

I've deleted and rebooted, pointed to the drivers manually, checked for new drivers etc. Can't get it to recognize. I know a lot of people are using these, can anyone help me?

I have another one using Win2k and it works fine. Am I going to have to go back to 2k on the new machine?

thanks!

Are you running SP2?

Well I have original version CD and the SP2 upgrade disk. Haven't loaded SP2 yet.

Surely someone else here has seen this, I know how many people have gotten deals on this box, Dell is backordered for a month!

Install SP2. Then I suspect you'll be all set. :)

I've had my SC400 for over a year and never encountered this problem until recently after I slipstreamed SP2 and re-installed Win XP.

I had to unplug all of my USB devices while installing/re-booting and after that I haven't had any problems.

Hmm...the reason I wrote this was because I thought installing SP1 (and hence, SP2) was required to get USB 2.0 working in XP. I went to the 400SC FAQ, and read this:

SOFTWARE

Q: Will the 400SC work with Windows XP?
A: While, not officially supported by Dell, the 400SC works fine with Windows XP Pro (and forseeably XP Home as well). You will need no drivers for the install, but after installation download and install the following:
Audio
Intel Chipset / INF Update (AGP, USB, Core PCI)
Network
Default Video Card (ATI RAGE XL PCI)

So it appears you just need the Intel Chipset drivers.

I'd still suggest just installing Sp2 though, and then give it another shot....

Delete the USB controllers from Device Manager and reboot the system. :)

HELP!!!!

I still can't solve this problem. I thought I had it licked because the device manager now shows everything installed correctly but in fact the USB does not work! It won't recognize anything plugged into it. Tried a printer, a Palm and a card reader and NADA!

Anyone else seen this?
