That's in the top 10% of the deals on the 400sc that I've seen. I would prolly join you all, but I've been told that if I buy one more of these, (I've got 3) that I'll be needing them for company :(

Really, what's wrong with a monolith built from 400sc's?

Those who get in, these are fantastic barebones, quiet and sturdy, with good parts.

great system. Well worth. ultra quiet, and just plain kick ass. Replace the ram and you are good to go. Add in a new video card if you are a hard core gamer, or 2-3 more HD if you just need tons of space.

Now with an 80GB HDD at same price. I think I'm gonna bite. Need a computer anyway, and this really seems like a decent deal on a solid computer. Does it have the 875 chipset, BTW? Onboard SATA?

These Dell deals are frustrating. I need 2 get 2 computers for my parents before christmas. One of them they are paying for and the other one I am paying for(they don' t know about the 2nd one.)

I am leaning towards buying a Dell for one of them and building the 2nd one myself but building one and buying one comes out nearly identical. Argh.

When do I pull the trigger?

I was glancing over the system specs and I didn't see anything about an agp slot. Do these things really have 8x agp slots?

oh yeah... Its got the whole nine yards! Its a nice Intel 875! Theres a site out there that has all the pictures and specs of this thing. I'd throw in the towel if I needed a computer!

Yeah, I see the pics and all from the link above, but reading HERE I don't see anything about an agp slot. It says it has a PCI 8MB video card.

Also didn't see 80GB hard drive for the same price.

Have purchased a number of 400SC machines. As the link mentioned above indicates, there is indeed an 8x AGP slot. The slot is officially unsupported by Dell, but does of course function.

The PCI card mentioned is the default that is included with the 400SC, and (as also mentioned in that above link) the included card is an Ati Rage XL.

I'm really thinking of getting these for our office as workstations. Does anyone know that I can mix/intermingle the ECC RAM with Non-ECC RAM as long as I turn off ECC in the Bios?

TIA

It says 400 mhz FSB. Is this the "quad-pumped" FSB ? So in actuality is it 100 mhz FSB ?

Bottom line, will the pc2100 (266) work in it ?

With that hard drive upgrade, I am leaning on getting one! I am just not sure if this is the deal for me. I have sat here and watched this deal for months, probably even missing some of the best deals. I am not sure whether I will miss out another one if I jump in now.

Plus, someone over at chubbywallet showed that the SC420 (successor to the 400SC) will be coming out soon, as there are docs on Dell's website now.

Gosh this is awfully tempting...

I wonder what the differences are between the 400SC and it's successor, the 420SC?

Me too. I did a search on dell.com for 420SC (and SC420) and nothing popped up.

This is such a good deal, but I just can't find a need for one. I already have three PC's, a gaming system, file server, and one hooked up to my TV/stereo for media.

I'd love to buy three of them, stick 'em in the local paper and sell them, but it's tough to sell a computer without an OS. Is there a way I can get a cheap legal copy of Windows XP Home I can sell with these?

OK I just broke down the other day and bought one of these and it is currently in shipping to me. Does anyone know if there is a way I can get the drive updated from the 40gig to the 80 gig. Yes I have the tracking number UPS currently has the box and it should be here in two days. Does Dell give even a one week price guarantee? I knew I should have given it few more days! :)

I believe Dell offers a 30 day price adjustment but it has to be the same configuration and $50 or more.

Hum I am at a $25 price adjustment and 40 Gigs of hard drive space. How do you do the math on that? :)

Don't worry "too" much about the price drop. I bought mine for $348 in June, the price dropped to $300 and Dell pricematched the drop 3 weeks later. It just took a call to their customer support. This deal is BETTER than the P4 2.8 deal last month for $298. 80GB vs. 40GB, and an addition 128 MB of RAM. The ram is usually sellable on eBay for about $25 a stick if you don't need it. It's a pretty solid machine. I am currently running with stock power supply:

P4 2.8mHz 800 mHz FSB
40 GB OEM HD
80 GB Maxtor 7200
Lite-On DVD-ROM
NEC 2510 DVD-RW
2X512 MB Micron
Audigy 2 ZS
ATI 9700 w/Artic Cooling VGA cooler
Hauppauge WinTV USB2 Tuner.

250 watt Powersupply and cooling seems OK as is. Machine is quiet untill you load CPU to 100% and then usually you have to be playing a game or encoding a DVD to work it that hard. Great machine for the price.

Can you add a coupon to this to make the deal even sweeter? Anyone have the link to sign up for the dell coupons? TIA
