Dell 250W PSU

Hi. I have a Dell 8300 with its non-ATX 250W PSU. As far as I know you cant replace this cheaply.

I want to get a 6600GT but that needs 300W. However Iv heard this Dell computer also comes with 9800 Pros (which also require 300W) but manages them on its 250W one.

Anyone know about Dells or if I should just give the 6600Gt a try? Also what problems could arise if you dont have enough power.. will it just underclock the card or could there be damage?


Sry this is my first post and I know buying Dell was a bad idea, but anyway any help from here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I bought a Dell PSU for my Dimension 8400 for the same reason. They are a great outfit, and the unit I received was very high quality. It went in perfectly.

Edit: damn, I meant PC Power and Cooling 🙂.

Ditto. Just noticed that today while surfing. You'd be hard pressed to find better for your Dell case.

I had a look at those but the only one that fits my 8300 is the Turbo-Cool for $149. Which with shipping would cost as much as my video card.

Since I wont be doing any other upgrades to my comp, do you think I could manage this all on 250W?

My point being 5 year warranty and super solid PSU with the tightest rails in the industry....
Again....PCP&C the best.....you won`t regret it!!

You'll most likely be fine with your current PSU. Major OEM PSUs tend to be very conservatively rated in terms of Wattage/they tend to be very solid (not overrated).

JEDIYoda its just that I think I don't think I will upgrade my computer again, and so if I don't really need this expense I don't want to get it. That PCPC one sounds good, but it's too expensive. So I'm trying to think of other options first.

That's what I've been hoping for. Just today I've been reading the Dell forums and they reckon they rate the average and not peak output, meaning my card is more like 350W. So right now I think I'm going to give it a try with my current PSU and then if there are problems get the PCPC one.
