Dell 2408 Is it worth spending extra?

Hi,
I want to buy a Dell 24" Monitor. I was wondering is it worth to spend extra on 2408 than 2407WFP-HC?

The new one has higher contrast ratio, HDMI and display port (not supported by most graphic cards)

So is it worth to spend another 100-150 extra for HDMI and Contrast ration and extra color gamut?

I dont' even know if I will be able to make the difference between 92% color gamut and 110% color gamut.

Any expert comments? please?

2407WFP-HC are known to have a problem regarding shadows. Dell will not fix it so if you have the problem you will have to shlep it back to him. If you don't care about the problem or if your monitor doesn't have it then it seems like a good deal to me.

I always love the dell monitors, because of them i'm spoiled and require the following in a monitor:

height adjustable, portrait/landscape adjustable, usb hub

I have a dell 1704FPT that is flawless and has been running great (including games with no ghosting) for going on 4 years now. Very happy, and if I had the chance, I'd replace it with a 240X-hc

Sorry if this dates my last Dell purchase but do they still do the satisfaction garuntee? Last time I bought an lcd from them (2007 FPW, way back in 2004) you could return it for any reason for a short period of time (14 days or something like that) and that included dead pixels. If they still do this you can try that cheaper model and see if you like it, if not send it back.

Of course if they don't do that anymore then you need to do more research on the different models before purchasing. Too bad they are getting rid of all their mall kiosks...

I had the 2407WFP-HC (loved the display/color) - but returned it due to temperature issues. Seems the 2407WFP-HC consistently ran about 110 degrees (too warm) from the top, back vent. I talked to Dell tech and they said that sounded hot, so I was shipped a replacement monitor. Same problem - temps up to 115 degrees. Makes you worry about longevity at those temps on a TFT panel.

I live in FL, and the ambient room temp in early Feb. was approx 65 degrees. My concern is during our hot months when the room temps are going to be approx 75 at best.

I am hoping that the 2408 has made some improvement here - but it's too early to tell. The monitor does seem to have additional perforations along the bottom, so this may allow for better air flow.

I've called Dell tech, but they (as expected) don't seem to have any negative reports or known issues. If anybody has purchased the 2408, I'd love to hear some feedback regarding temps. Thanks.

I think all monitors get that hot. Remember, there's no fan. If it wasn't that hot, there would be no convection of air, so it WOULD reach that temperature.

I want to agree, but I have 2 NEC LCD's (19" & 20" TFT Panels) - and they are not even warm. I have a 19" CRT and it doesn't get as hot as that Dell. Heck, even the Dell tech people felt that 110 degrees plus was too much. I'm not sure what's right, but I went into several brick and mortar stores (Best Buy, etc) and "felt" the 24" monitors there. Nowhere as hot as those Dells.

2408 isnt worth it over a 2407 for $150 more.

first off it has no speakers so hdmi is not really useful. 2407 is hdcp dvi anyway. the display port is useless. its an AMD / dell backed standard and hdmi 1.3 has more or less everything display port has anyway so point is moot. all the consumer electronics copmanies, nvidia , hp and intel are the hdmi backers so yeah im assuming hdmi will win this one.

the color gamut stuff really doesnt matter for 99% of people. it would only really matter if you were some insane graphics artist. i've read for the most part that the color gamut is more a function of the backlight than anything anyway. it just permits a slightly wider spectrum of colors due to the different type of light a different backlight can emit (supposedly led backlights are best for it). i really doubt its noticeable. i think a normal non 92% gamut is 75% . a typical CRT was 70% by the way... and people seem to prefer CRTs for color so go figure.

Based on the "blog" review above, I bought the 2408. Arrived today. After set up and tweaking settings, I found that the beast is running around 118 degrees! This is definitely hotter than the 2407WPF-HC that posted above. I will continue to "monitor" this LCD - but my initial impression is it is a great display/"picture" - but too hot. I'll call Dell again in a couple of days. If they have a "solution", good; if not, RMA. And it is such a nice panel. :(
