I'm in the market for a new monitor, I had originally been looking at 20" monitors (VX2025WM, 205BW, etc) but I'd really like a higher resolution than 1680x1050 and a bit more real estate is always good. :)

With the new Dell monitors, I know the 2007WFP, at least the first revision, had banding issues and several others, I believe. I never really looked into the 2407WFP because I didn't want to spend that much, at least originally. Are there any significant issues on the newer revisions? All I do is gaming and surfing the web, so it doesn't have to be perfect, I don't do any video/photo editing.

Also, I know right now the 2407WFP is $747, yet there is a 25% coupon that you can buy on eBay, etc. Can anyone use this, and is it 25% of $747, or another price?

Thanks.

No significant banding issues on the 2407wfp, at least to my eyes. Far Cry and Warcraft 3 looked beautiful on my buddy's brand new RevA02 2407WFP.

Why wouldn't the coupon work? It's a 25% off coupon for (I believe) the 1907FP, 2007WFP, and 2407WFP........ it says for "preferred members" though...... does that mean anything? I'm wondering whether the coupon's really 25% off $747 or some other price.

I've got the older versionor the 2405 which works great for me both gaiming and video apps.
"Preferred members" most likely means DPA or Dell Preferred Account holder.

So that coupon won't work for "normal" people? I don't even have an account at Dell, how do you get a preferred account?

ACC (Adaptive Contrast Control) is disabled in Desktop mode, so there is no banding on the 2007WFP or 2407WFP.

I'd highly recommend the Sony SDM-P234 for desktop (text, web, gaming, etc) usage. Competitively priced at $760 (it was $1000 just a month ago). Newegg

The Dell may be better for strictly watching movies due to higher contrast but even that's debateable. The Sony provides high color saturation at a low and easy-on-the-eyes brightness. The Sony can display a saturated color at 190 nits where it takes the Dell probably 300 nits to provide the same color. Will the color be brighter on the Dell? Probably, but I think we can all agree a good CRT still provides the best image, which is generally max 100 nits without SuperBright (e.g., a photo editing monitor). Viewing angle will be wider, and response time should be the same. Uniformity is second-to-none and that's hard to say for the Dells.

Color Rendering

As you can see, this 23"-wide monitor has exceptional static qualities. Of course, its contrast simply isn't up to the latest standards.

The panel's contrast was good. Brightness, for once, was at a good level, and the black level was quite respectable. Note, too, that Sony has left off its X-Black filter, which is supposed to be a miracle solution to get unprecedented contrast. As you know by now, we don't like X-Black, and Sony's not using it on their top-of-the-line monitors proves we're right.

In any case, the contrast showed very good stability without the X-Black filter.

Video is surely the SDM-P234's strongest suit. Whereas few 16:10 monitors are capable of showing a movie correctly, the SDM-P234 did it remarkably well. Video noise was very low. We saw very little sparkling. And the viewing angles were also quite good.

The main downfall I see for getting the Sony (as mentioned in the contrast measurement) is a higher black level (0.46 nits vs. 0.3 or so). I'm actually not sure as I haven't seen the 2407WFP's black level measured, but the Sony's is probably a tad higher. The Sony also doesn't have ACC (not that big of a deal since it can keep its brightness under control just fine without it), and of course, it doesn't have a return policy as good as Dell's. But if doing mainly desktop stuff, I would get the Sony instead. And yes, it's a 23" monitor which means it has a finer dot pitch. If you feel safer getting the Dell, then go ahead. Tons of people love it.

Edit: I forgot to mention the Sony doesn't have all the inputs/HDCP that the Dell has. (Grr, why did they omit something so simple. :|) So that may very well be the defining factor for you.

The 2407 has HCDP? What about the 2007?

Edit: I just found where it says that.... I did not know that, nice.

I don't really care all too much about inputs (DVI is all I need :) ) and I don't plan to watch movies, so HDCP isn't too much of a factor either.

What I'd like to know is does that coupon work. Because if it does, I can get the Dell for the price I really want to spend, $500-600. $700+ is really stretching what I wanted to spend.

It will be %25 of the retail price. You can't stack % off coupons. And you would have to be a Dell Preferred customer if that is what the coupon says.
