I've been looking at flat panel monitors in stores and reading through various threads here. The Samsung 215TW and NEC 20WMGX2 were the monitors I was most interested in initially. (I'm looking for a monitor with composite video inputs.)

I've seen both the 215TW and the 20WMGX2 in the store. They were both hooked up to PCs through their analog inputs. The text on the Windows menus looked substantially clearer on the NEC than the Samsung. The high gloss finish on the NEC made the picture look more vibrant than the Samsung's.

I have been unable to look at the Dell. The salesperson at their kiosk in the mall said it had a high gloss finish.

How does the image quality of the Dell compare to the NEC and the Samsung? Does the picture on LCDs look significantly different with DVI vs. VGA inputs?

well if your in america id probabl go for the NEC, it has got one of the best screens ive seen. it sucks for me though because over here in europe it has only two inputs, no HDCP over DVI, and it hasnt got features like Picture in Picture.

we got the shaft

america gets the good product with more conectivity and features, and built in TV.

the samsung is supposed to be sublime as well, it hasnt got the glossy finish but apparently according this review

http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=3081

its one of the best they've tested, the design is great, its got so many more functions/features than the NEC (read PIP, PBP, Svideo, component in, composite in, DVI with HDCP, VGA, hight adjustment, swivle and rotate etc (over the Euro version of the NEC anyway)) and they said it was near perfect in the image quality tests.

the dell obviously is bigger and costs more money, if you can afford the dell, then id probably go for that. but between the NEC and the Samsung, its probably a toss up if your american. if you want glossy screen go for the NEC, if you want an extra inch and a Matt screen chose samsung...you cant fall off

In terms of image quality:

NEC 20WMGX2 > Samsung 215TW > Dell 2407WFP

I define image quality as: response time * viewing angles * color reproduction

Of course, Dell has an awesome return policy too. For VGA, quality widely varies depending on the LCD's input and the graphics card's output. Lower bandwidth (refresh rate*resolution) will result in better image quality on VGA but it won't be better if the LCD has to scale. It would be a shame to use VGA on one of these screens though, really. :Q

Oh, if you haven't seen it: lcdresource.com - 20WMGX2 vs. 215TW

The only problem with the NEC is it seems quite physically unversatile (no height adjustment or pivot).

Thanks for the replies.

I had all ready read the comparison between the Samsung and the NEC at lcdresource.com. Before reading that, I had begun to lean towards the Samsung. That review made me more seriously consider the NEC.

From what I've heard about problems with Dell monitors, I think I'll avoid the 2407 FPW.

It seems there are very few 19" or 20" monitors with composite, s-video or component inputs. It seems as you stated on your site that many manufacturers are focusing on widescreen monitors.

At this point, I need to decide if the NEC is worth an extra $150. I think I'll probably wind up getting the Samsung.

The information you posted in your forum thread and your website has been very useful. Thanks for the help.
