Dell 2400 ram upgrade

My dad has a Dell 2400 with 1gb of ram installed but there are errors with the ram. I am looking for a cheap upgrade for this. After reading the manual, it says the max memory is 2gb but the max per slot is 512mb and there is two slots. How is it possible to get 2gb if each slot only supports 512mb's?

I would like to upgrade to 2gb but don't want to spend the money if it is not going to work.

It looks like other people have gotten 2gb to work with their Dell 2400.

I am looking to buy 2gb(2x1gb) from newegg. Would there be any difference in these two sets? One is a single stick of 1gb and the other is 2gb(2x1gb) in dual channel. Would it make a difference if I buy 2 of the single stick vs. the 2gb kit?

What about this one? Anybody ever use PQI? How are they?

I am not looking to spend much, I just want to hold him over until we get the new build going for him.

Dual channel or not doesn't make much difference anyway, on that old of a system go for price not brand most of the memory if the same speed will go dual channel if the design is the same.

Buy this it will work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-101-_-Product

Since that ram is PC3200 and the Dell only supports up to PC2700, would that reduce the speed to PC2700 once it is installed?

Does this ram have to be DDR SDRAM? I was looking on ebay and it only shows it as DDR. I am assuming it is the same thing?

PC3200 should work fine. I wouldn't buy new RAM for this computer. I would look for used RAM from the FS/FT forum. If you're patient you should be able to find 1GB DIMMs for about $20 apiece.
