Dell 2005FPW @ 75Hz with ATI 9800 Pro possible?

I purchased the 2005FPW with the expectation that I could run it at 1680x1050 @ 75Hz as it says on the website. I'm running through DVI, but I can't get it to run at 75Hz no matter what I do. I've tried installing the omega drivers and regardless of what other utilities i use i still get this refresh rate . Also, when I hit the monitor's menu button I get something like this but it always says 60Hz.

Does refresh rate even matter for LCDs? Can it be adjusted if you're connected over DVI?

Frustratedly yours,
B

It really doesn't matter in the way you are thinking about it. 60 is actually the perfered hz rating and the best looking.

Exactly. LCD monitors do not "refresh", hence, refresh rates are entirely pointless.

Does it still look as sharp @ 75Hz?

I always thought the reason that LCDs even supported 75Hz was for backwards compatibility with older cards or instances where 75Hz would be the default on a lot of people's computers and it wouldn't work defaulted to 60Hz. Of course that is also a throwback to CRT days when 75Hz was considered minimum and 85Hz good for the eyes.

I don't know if it makes a difference with games.

60Hz LCD and 60Hz CRT as mechanically different right? It doesn't mean it's refreshing the same way.

Sure you can feed it images at any arbitrary rate (as the graphics card lets you). ANY rate is as good as ANY OTHER because LCDs display a static image (while CRTs have a scanning beam).

Hence, makers settle for the lowest possible transmission frequency because this gives the best signal quality on the cable.

Does 75hz actually give you 75fps instead of 60fps? Seems it would be worth it then. Or does the (visible) framerate only depend on the response time?

Try use the VGA connector instead of DVI and you might be able to change the refresh rate, if you must. With DVI some of the options are locked. LCDs are concerned with response time while CRTs are concerned with refresh rate.

Are you running this through a DVI cable or what? Are you using ATI's catalyst drivers? What version? Did you install the monitor drivers? Sorry for the interrogation, but I've been trying to do this for awhile and can't get it to work.

... which your display is not going to show you. It's a 16 ms panel. 60 Hz is saturating that already, feeding it pixel changes at a faster rate is not going to make the actual pixels change faster than they physically can.

This is a pointless exercise. Get over it already.
