I have a IBM Thinkpad T40 with a 32 MB Radeon 7500 and I connected my new 2001FP using DVI. When I select 1600 x 1200 x 32, it places the monitor in 1280 x 1024 and requires me to scroll to see the whole desktop. I have updated the video drivers and installed the 2001FP drivers from the Dell website.

Does anyone have suggestions?

Our you using the laptop and monitor screensa at the same time, or the 2001FP by itself. The IT guy at my company screwed up my video drivers on my laptop, and I can only to go 1600 x 1200 on my external monitor if its the only screen. If I go dual screen with my laptop screen and the external monitor monitor at the same time, then I have to scroll around the LCD. I'm using a 21" Samsung LCD with 1600 x 1200 native resolution.

I use the monitor screen with the laptop closed. Both screens show up during set up (as screen 1 and 2), but I only use one at a time. I think you are on to something, but I can't figure out what to reconfigure at this point.

I have the same monitor and while your video card might go up that high your monitor only supports up to 1680 x 1050. I accidently did the same thing in a game and it threw up an error. I think in windows it will allow you to select that resoultion it will make you scroll through desktop. Hope that helps

I think you're thinking of the 2005FPW which is widescreen. He's talking about the 2001FP which is 4:3 and 1600x1200.

Wow, I didn't realize I was getting away with murder the whole while I ran my 2001FP at 1600x1200.

Yes. They didn't help.

Is there any chance that a BIOS update would help? I haven't checked whether it is current.

A BIOS update would probably just configure your laptop to recognise newer CPUs and fix bugs in the BIOS menus themselves. At any rate, I would look at using Omega drivers instead of the IBM drivers as the Omegas are probably more up-to-date with supported resolutions and such. I am pretty sure that the 7500 would be limited to 1280x1024 if using a mirrored or dual mode. You'll have to go to a single display mode and switch between the two to get 1600x1200 on the Dell. I have an Inspiron XPS Gen 1 w/ MR9800 that has no problem displaying 1920x1200 and 1600x1200 in dual-screen mode. :)

I'll yank my XPS out of its bag and look at the display mode options on the Omega drivers just to make sure you can do it.

EDIT. Try the Omega drivers. You will set the resolution of your laptop panel using the regular windows display properties then go into Omega's Catalyst Control Panel to activate the external Dell. The connected displays will be represented by information blocks with a small tab on the top left corner of each block. The internal LCD should be labeled "Panel" and the Dell should be labeled "FPD" or similar. Once you get it to display any resolution you can disable the laptop's panel and set the resolution of the external Dell. Remember to switch back to the internal panel when you will be away from the external Dell just in case.
