I'm looking pretty seriously at the 2001FP, heard a lot of good things. How does this monitor look running say a 1280 x 1024 resolution? I've heard some lcds look like crap if you don't run them in their native resolutions.

1280 x 1024 wont look that good because that smush's the image as its a 5:4 resolution and the panel is 4:3.

If you use a standard 4:3 res like 1280x960 it will look great. I can't notice any difference on my 2001FP from 1600x1200 and 1152x864 with 4X AA. Actually the lower res and AA has less jaggies. Either way I think the monitor scales well to pretty much all 4:3 resolutions for games. On the desktop obviously do't use anything other than 1600x1200 haha.

That's good to know, makes me less anxious about possibly getting one & not being able to run games @ 16x12 in 6 months w/my 6800GT

with nvidia cards (havent checked with ati), its also pretty straight forward to run the games at 1280 in tiled mode, where it paints only the center pixels with no scaling. This gives u the same exact size as a 17in lcd at native rez. Its not great, to lose all that real estate, but in the short run and only for some super intensive games, its a decent way to game and still use the higher rez for all yer other work.

Yeah you can do that. But after you look at the picture with is scaled you won't even worry about it. It still looks great.
