Dell 2001FP pissing me off!

I have a Dell 2001FP monitor with an ATI AIW card, using DVI. The problem is...if i turn off the monitor, i can not wake it up afterwards. No matter how much i press the keyboard or move the mouse, nothing happens. When i try pressing the menu button on the monitor, it says "Monitor is in Power Save Mode. Hit any key or move mouse to wake up" Sometimes pressing the power button and cycling through the inputs a bunch of times works, but most of the time it doesn't. Even when i reboot the computer, the monitor still does not wake up. What i usually have to do is plug in my xbox into the composite source (that always works, no problem) and then cycle through the inputs and then reboot the computer. After the reboot, the monitor on the dvi input usually wakes up and works fine. Sometimes i have to do this several times before it works. I've updated all kinds of drivers and have tried unplugging and pluggin the dvi cable in to see if it wakes it up, but nothing works.

Oh, but if i don't turn off the monitor, and just let it go into the sleep mode by not using it for whatever amount of time, then it always wakes up with the first hit of the keyboard. So problem happens only if i physically press the power button on the monitor and then try to wake it up after a while.

Has anybody encountered a similar problem? Any suggestions on how to fix this? I love my dell monitor, but not being able to ever turn it off is getting to be a pain in the ass. Please help!!! Thanks.

not much you can do except get it RMAed probably...ive never heard of this issue. dont get pissed off though since you just had some bad luck. hey, my seasonic s12-500 died after 3 days of use. it happens to the best of us.

I probaly can't RMA it since it's been over a year already. And i called their tech support and they were like "did you make sure that the monitor is plugged in?" So much for great tech support. And sorry about your seasonic.

Have you tried the 2001FP on another machine? Just to rule out a videocard compatibility issue.

No i haven't, but i assumed that since even after a reboot the monitor doesn't wake up, it's the monitor. But i will try it on my laptop and see if the same thing happens or not.

I really think it would be a good thing... because if you try to get more support, they will probably try to dig more and more into your other hardware. But if the monitor works every time on another machine, you already know it's not a monitor problem. Just nice to rule things out. I'd definitely hook it up to something else.

yeah i was going to say to try it on another machine but i figured since it worked every time with the xbox that it must be the monitor. however, now i think it would be a good idea to give it a go on another machine or two just to make sure it really is the monitor. GL.

It only happends to the worst of us, you just dont kno it

I have the same monitor and also experienced the same before. When this happened to me the monitor would stay in sleep mode til it loads window. So i would not even be able to view POST.

To solve I turned off all power to the PC and unplugged the power cords, let it sit for about a minute, then plug everything back in and it would work again.

I just bought a brand new Dell Precision 380 machine with nVidia Quadro FX 1400 video card and two of these monitors last week. One of the monitors began doing this very same thing within one week of owning the new system. I just went a round with Dell tech support (after waiting on hold for over 40 minutes) and they are shipping me a new monitor tomorrow. Apparently this is a *WELL KNOWN* problem with a large number of these 2001FPs. It mostly affects only 1600X1200 mode thru the DVI-D interface, where the monitor refuses to recognize when it's supposed to wake up. Analog VGA mode, and lesser resolutions seem to not cause this symptom to happen. Are you attempting to use 1600x1200 DVI-D input mode too like I am?

In my case, since my primary monitor doesn't have the problem and still shows the Windows desktop, I can simply change the resolution of my secondary monitor (that is not "going to sleep", but rather "going into a coma" instead) from 1600x1200 down to 1024x768 and the 2nd monitor will suddenly wake up and work again, then I can switch it back to 1600x1200 and it stays lit up until you power off the monitor then it acts up again.

Obviously if you only have one monitor, this technique won't work, but if you could boot up into Windows "Safe Mode", it'll also force a screen resolution and refresh rate change and wake the monitor up. Not being able to see the bootup screen during bootup to get into safe mode may present a bit of an issue, but it can be done blindly if you try.

You probably don't want to hear it, but just leave it on to go into sleep mode. LCDs take up a very small portion of power, especially when in sleep mode.

This monitor spontaneously goes into sleep mode by itself regardless of what the Windows power settings are configured to. You can have Windows set to "Always On" with "Turn Off Monitor" option set to "never"..., yet the monitor will still go into sleep mode anyway, from which it will not wake unless you do something drastic. Also if you power-cycle the monitor, it will go to sleep immediately after it's power-up self-test even though there is a video signal being fed to it.
