Hi

I am looking to purchase this monitorsometime this week from dell.
Dell 2001fp for 720 +tax

Everytime i clicked on a LCD thread or something, people always recommend this monitor. and maximum PC still has this as the best LCD.

I have a couple of question about this LCD as i am not to familiar with LCDs

1. The specs says it can do 1600x1200 at 60Hz. I am looking to use 1600x1200 but am worried about the 60Hz. Does that apply to LCDs?

2. Has anyone had problems with dead pixels? How is dell's service are dead monitor or if i get a dead pixel later on in the LCD lifes?

3. It took me a LONG time to get this much money, i go to school full time and only work a little, Is there any better monitors for around the same price i should be considering? I will mainly be typing papers and using spreadsheets, i plan on playing EQ2 and maybe some of the new FPS games. Watch dvds and anime

4. Any reason i should NOT get this monitor? does it hum or look weird on dvds? Screen is not clear?

5. Any words of wisdom for someone looking into leaping into the LCD world?

TIA

Also... has anyone heard of a replacement? Is a new model about to come out (as it seems like with all these deals on them)

I love my 2001FP. It's easily the nicest monitor I've ever seen. Refresh rates are not something to worry about on LCDs; they don't have the eye-straining flicker that CRTs do. This monitor works fine for casual gamers. The only drawback is the price. I got mine for $820, which was a good deal at the time, but it's still an awful lot of money to spend on one component.
If you have the money and don't mind putting all of it into a monitor, this is the one to get. I just can't express how impressive it is. Get it, and let us know if you have any questions about it.

I finally gave in and got this monitor about 2-3 weeks ago.

I have to say, it might be my best computer purchase yet. Everything looks bright, clear, and crisp for me. I also use it to play my Xbox and Gamecube on and its great. No ghosting that I've ever noticed. Even running TV on it through my PVR-250 looks great (from far away).

I had it shipped overnight and it got to me very quickly (as should be expected) with no dead or stuck pixels. Was easy to setup and have had nothing but a great experience so far.

Combining this monitor with Digital Vibrance Control on nvidia cards and wow.

Games look great, its a good thing I picked up a 6800GT to push them at native resolution.

I have 2 - 19" Viewsonics (vg191 & VX900) my dell is far sharper & the color is better also. Everything is better.

Text is better at 1600 x 1200 than 1280 x 1024 ... You won't regret getting this lcd.

Regards,
Jose

I used a Dell 17" Widescreen LCD TV which was nice for watching DVDs, but I gave in and upgraded to the 2001FP and do not regret it. I got mine for $650 and so far no dead pixels. I love how big the screen is and watching movies on it are dope! I think you'll be pleased with your purchase. After months of researching, I found this monitor to be the best for the money.

1. The specs says it can do 1600x1200 at 60Hz. I am looking to use 1600x1200 but am worried about the 60Hz. Does that apply to LCDs?

Strictly speaking 60Hz is not an issue with LCD. LCD's do not refresh only CRT's.

Has anyone had problems with dead pixels? How is dell's service are dead monitor or if i get a dead pixel later on in the LCD lifes?

Anandtech reviewed the very same panel. Although a number of dead/stuck pixels were noted, Dell did say that as AT had a pre-production panel the problem of dead/stuck pixels will be less on panels released to retail. I'm not sure on Dell's policy on pixel problems but they will not exchange a panel if you only have a few I take it.

3. It took me a LONG time to get this much money, i go to school full time and only work a little, Is there any better monitors for around the same price i should be considering? It is a lot of money. AT's review as you will see from the above link "still" rates this as possibly the best panel available since November 2003. Pretty good going if you ask me.

4. Any reason i should NOT get this monitor? does it hum or look weird on dvds? Screen is not clear?

As far as I know there is no reason not to get this LCD if you are hell bent on getting one now. Personally, it just doesn't look right. But, specs are far more important than the looks and that should be the reason you go for it I think. I mean it doesn't look bad, god knows there are worse looking LCD's but it's just not for me. I have been waiting for a better panel to come along since November last year and unfortunately I have yet to find one.

5. Any words of wisdom for someone looking into leaping into the LCD world?

Just make sure your graphics card is up to par. I mean you will want to run at 1600 x 1200 the LCD's native resolution for it to look right. However, it scales very well I hear. Have a look at one, I have not seen one in the flesh but you will just know if it's right for you. It's safe to say, Native Resolution, Response Time, Luminance and Contrast Ratio seem to be the things to look for. Be careful of manufacturers quoting figures that are just not achievable, read as many reviews as you can to get an informed view.

Good Luck. ;)

I called and convinced a customer service person to do it. Their website has it for $720 right now; and he waived shipping.

I love my 2001fp and the value for the buck has to be the best of all the lcd's.
Many people get a further 10% discount by ordering through their place of employment. My cousin got his through Southwest Airlines for something like $650 total/shipped.

The thing that's keeping me from getting this LCD is just that I don't know how color is to this compared to a CRT (as I do graphics and animation).

I bet if I saw this in real life, I could easily decide.

Generally it is common knowledge that LCD's tend to give significantly better vibrant colours than CRT.

Who makes the Dell LCD's? Any chance you could go with someone else who's using the same components? Samsung, NEC, Viewsonic? There just isn't any competition buying an LCD from Dell (that I can see).

Please correct me if I'm out to lunch.

Dell uses LG Phillips panel but Benq manufactures most of the completed units for Dell. Several companies use this same LG Phillips panel but no one sells the LCD cheaper than Dell.

I actually bought it online for $750 with tax & shipping included, but I called in a week later and told them I was thinking about returning it. The CSR gave me about $102 credit back to my credit card! :) That definately made me think twice about returning it!

i bought a 2000fp a year or two ago...no dead pixels, gorgeous LCD...

so i bought a 2001fp LCD...no dead pixels, gorgeous...
i hope to have two 2001 fp's some day.

there is a problem with some DVI cards and the monitor....read the dell forums to see what i mean...required some fooling around to get the monitors to work correctly with the vid card i bought....in analog mode they always have worked flawlessly.

frankly, i can't tell any difference running thenm digital or analog...simply great bopth ways.

i also use both as televisions.....the ol' ati tv wonder ve (el cheapo) works GREAT....

surf the net, watch tv 20" of lCD goodness..i've never wasted some much time so efficiently

I can't either. Everyone talks like OMG OMG DVI IS TEH B0MBWINNAR but I just switched from using the analog to DVI on my 2001FP a couple weeks ago and didn't notice a big difference between them. With DVI the text seems to be a little sharper, but it may just be psychological. One forum member said that DVI is supposed to have less ghosting in games than analog...I haven't tested this yet, but I had no noticeable ghosting in games when I was using the analog input.

BTW, you guys were talking about scaling down the res...I just wanted to say that before I got my 6800 GT, I had a 9700 Pro and couldn't play newer games like Doom 3 and Far Cry smoothly at the 1600x1200 native resolution of the 2001FP, so I scaled those games back to 1280x1024 for smooth game play and they looked just fine. After the 6800 GT I play at 16x12 so it's not an issue, but I wanted to say that if you have to reduce the resolution, you shouldn't experience crappy image quality in games. Windows desktop is a different story unless you scale down to 800x600, which is exactly half of 1600x1200 so the 8x6 res retains its sharpness...

some of you are talking about gaphic card problems?

I am currently using a crappy 9200np. I do not plan on upgrading untill EQ2 comes out.
Will i have a problem?

Should i call Dell up and ask for a lower price? how does haggling on the phone work?

thx

I have 2 of these panels on my desk now. They are very nice. The only thing about them is that they are very bright. Had to turn that down right away.

As for the problems with video cards, if memory serves me correctly, it was with nVidia cards that used DVI. When the monitor was put into power saving mode, something was over-writing part of the panel's firmware. I'm not sure who's fault this is, but Dell did release an updated firmware that fixed this problem. I believe it was related to the fact the firmware was not write-protected originally and the new one enabled write-protection.

Really the $720 USD the 2001FP can be had for these days is a great bargain. That is why I picked a second one up. FYI, when I bought my first one last December, I paid $1549 CAD for it plus tax!

If you look under Dell's Small Business section, you'll find the 2001FP lower than $700... ;)
