gettin me a new monitor for xmas, but im down to these two. Finally getting rid of the Big CRT. The dell looks awesome and so does the Viewsonic. But its 20.1" vs 17 and 600 vs 400. Also the ViewSonic has HDTV support which is awesome cuz im going to be watching TV on this monitor also. But all in all what would you guys recommend for this Thx

Unless that Viewsonic does 1600x1200, the Dell 2001FP is the winner every time for me, with the higher resolution and bigger screen, it's really not a worthwhile comparison in my opinion.

I was in the same boat and I like to game and even though people say the 2001fp is good for gaming, I dont have a video card that can run decent frames at its native resolution and thats what I want to play at and the native res on the vp171 is only 12x10, and it was on sale at dell :). Either way you wont be disappointed unless you pay too much.

The Dell is very good playing games on non native resolutions. I play games at 1152x 864 all the time with AA and AF bumped up of course. I do this because it runs at 75hz instead of 60hz and I always have vsync on.

so what about the "screendoor" affect i see so much on forums, that is mainly the one thing that is keeping me from purchasing the 2001FP

I don't notice it. Many people rave about how good a monitor it is and I can't agree more. I suppose you might see such a thing sitting very close but I sit about 2 to 2.5 ft away and don't see a thing. I love mine and my dad loves his as well as many others. There is always going to be a few bad ones shipped and the people complaining about the problem are probably those who have bad ones. If I were you I'd get the 2001FP and if you don't like it return it. I belive there is a 30 day return policy on them, which is pretty nice.
