DELL 2001FP OR DELL 2005FPW

Please vote and help me decide. This monitor will be used for just about everything. Equal portions of Productivity/Browsing/Movies/Games.

Depends, if you are a movie buff then definately the widescreen 2005pf. Most of the recent games are supporting the widescreen resolution also. I personally would go withe the widescreen since its the new trend in visual products. Like most of the video editing programs have widescreen capabilities now too.

Already posted this in your other thread, but:

Go with the 2005fpw if:

- You will play games.
- You will watch DVD's.
- You will be doing photo editing.
- You will be doing movie editing.
- You don't want your display to be obsolete in 2 years

Go with the 2001FP if:

- 1680x1050 is not enough real estate for you.
- You absolutely must have the largest physical display area (in square inches).

If you can't tell already, I went with the 2005fpw.

Personally I'd go for the 2005fpw because I watch a lot of movies and I think it looks better in games too.

Both are excellent though and I'd argue the 2001fp is a slightly better general purpose/windows montor.

remember ppl vote what they own generally. i think you'll see the 2001 win because its been out so much longer, and many more people own it.

thats why these polls arent really the best way to find out these questions.... (unless you understand what motivates some ppl to vote for one or the other)

i do own a 2005 and voted 2005.. but i did a lot of research to cut thru people's bias and tho i dont own a 2001, i definitely made the best choice for me.

search the video forums for posts and find my thread on these two screens. it will help you alot

I agree with housecat. It is worth actually looking at both if you can, I think the 2005 has a better picture, and all the games (just a few) I play happen to support widescreen natively anyway. The 'games don't support widescreen' stuff you here is usually bollocks, although not -all- do.

i chose the 2001 over the 2005 for this single reason. I used to play games using a pantherXL game controller and nearly every game i had to go into the .ini files and mod stuff and hack config files to make them work with the controller. I play many older games that do not support wide screen (if the 2005 had a non wide screen version, i would have bought it) but it didnt. I swore that i would never purchase hardware again that i had to spend more time making my games work than i did playing them. So, i got a 2001 for the reason that all games support its standard ratio and 1600x1200 is a much more used resolution than its wide screen equivalent. Both were the same cost when i bought them 2 weeks ago.

That's a good point. If you spend a lot of time playing older games that have no support for widescreen displays, then the 2001FP is a probably a better choice. However, I don't think you should equate a game controller to a video display. The game controller is relatively less expensive and you could actually buy one every year. Heck, you could buy one every few months, even. But a lot of people buy computer displays to last for years, so you should also consider what you will be doing on this display 5 years from now.

Was not talking about money, more about time and how the transition was that made up for it. It was very very very hard to relearn FPS all over again when i gave up on the PXL and switched to a mouse because i got so tired of having to. Mice are not as fun as the PXL but at least they work with the game right out of the box.

Like I've said before, if you don't play any WS games now and can afford to replace your display in a couple of years, then the 2001FP would be a better choice for you. However, let's not scare people away from buying the 2005FPW with the idea that making a game work with it will be time consuming. It's really no more difficult than adding or changing 3 lines in a config file. If you can find your way to these forums, you can probably do that.
